i really need a . . . .

*Sigh*

Yes, Jaxx is right.

I recently 'caved' and got a Hinderer (and a few other experimental models) to tide me over.

*Sigh*

:) Knowing that you are a man who appreciates fine knives, I figured that if you ever got one, you'd definitely be in agreement!

I m going to side with THE BULLY and be the one to say...

Rat TRAP!

Ive had it and a 2nd gen xm18 and I wouldn't give you my Trap for two Hinderer's.( OK , maybe, but only because of the cost of the xm and the fact that I have 4 traps:D)

ITs just too big for me to consider pocket carry. It made a great prybar but was just too thick for me.

I was either pulling my pants up due to the weight or scratching and banging my hand while accessing my pocket.

That's funny, 'cause I wouldn't give you my only XM-18 for all four of those Rat Traps! :D;) ...Although I was lucky to have snagged mine before the price for Gen 1's & II's went sky high. (Mine is a Gen I, with a Gen II makeover.)

You need to feel an X-18 before you through down the Funds.

I had one in tha pass around last year and hated it! The azz of the handle just drops away from your hand. Good for push cuts, and thats about it.
Super smooth and well made, but very heavy and felt awfull to me.

Get you a folder with a straighter handle...the Sebenza handle is hard to beat, the Striders have a great feeling handle, and sereral others.

Just say no to azz drop!

Jerry, IF you ever make one PLEASE don't let it have the azz drop handle:p

This is why so many fine makers of quality knives & folders thrive... Everyone has different ideas & opinions as what makes one folder better than another, and much of this is based on what fits them the best. :)
I'm a fan of the "azz drop" on the Hinderer XM-18; to me, the ergonomics of this knife can't be beat (so far) as how it "fits" me personally, and the fact that it's built like a tank certainly doesn't hurt!. Would love to see this on the Busse folder, but it would be very cool of Jerry (when he's ready to release his folder) to give us a choice... Mebbe offering 2 or 3 different handle variations that fit the same blade shape on the Busse folder would really allow us all to choose what works for each of us the best. :D:thumbup:

When I found the XM-18, my quest was laid to rest... As I said to Rick Hinderer, "The XM-18 will be the last folder I buy 'til the Busse folder is released!" So far this is mostly true... I did manage to get lucky enough to score a JerzeeDevil Q-36 flipper from RJ Martin (Very sweet knife!), but it's for my collection, not EDC. Of course Mr. Hinderer just HAD to come out with the XM-24... So mebbe THAT will be the next folder, if I'm lucky enough to get my hands on one!! lolz

Ain't it great that we do have so many different makes & models of folders to choose from?? ...And may you all find "The One" best suited to you... At least until the BUSSE FOLDER arrives!!

Well I am going to put one up for the Sebbie. I carry a large Cocobolo inlay. I love the ergo's and size. Fits my hand just right, they are easy to carry clipped in the pocket despite the largish size and are the worlds easiest knife to pull apart and maintain.

I keep it sharp by giving it a few strokes on a Japanese water stone from time to time. For me this folder cannot be beat.

I do have an SMF which I thought would get plenty of pocket time but the Sebbie just will not give it a chance. BTW, the Striders are also well built, but you need to like big heavy knives and they are a major PIA to pull down and clean, so much so that I have not attempted to do this on one of mine.

Jamie, I fell in love with the sebbies years ago and havn't bought anything but slipjoints and a couple of nice William Henry's (for collection) since. I still have several of my old folders, but wouldn't recommend any I have over the sebbie. I did buy a D2 spyderco Para a month or so ago, I like it, but the clip's is in the wrong place.

The two must for me are... somewhat of a straight handle, and that the clip be in position so the hand rubs the back of handle, not scraping the hand.

I've had a few small and large sebbies without inlays, and the small wasn't wide enough for my hand. The day the Micarta Inlay Sebbies were released at Blade I bought the large and small as soon as the doors were open. Carried my matte pins with me and they offered to change them for me, so my lazy self let them. The small micarta feels great, and I've EDC it since. Its not needed as much on the large but I like the feel of micarta.

I really fondled the Strider SnG and the Kirby Lamert Inferno last year at Blade and loved both, but decided the SnG was to heavy, and really didn't like either as much as my Sebbies. I also like most of Greg Lightfoots, and Kit Carsons folders.

Did you pick up the CRK Umnumzaan last year at Blade Jamie? The blade is a bit thicker than the sebbie at .140, and it opened much smoother than a sebenza. I almost bought one, but didn't think it looked as good as the sebbie.

Thanks for this advice! I believe I shall 'hang in' until Blade and then look about for these (and similar) folders ... see which one really fits my hand. Meanwhile, my own large Sebbie stays with me, of course.:D

Also looking hard at Jaxx's advice ... I often agree with his taste. XM-24, eh?? That sounds very interesting.

See you both at Blade.

LMAO!

THe Bully will be along soon to get ya!;):D

Bang for the buck, it's hard to beat the ZT0300's, but Chris Reeve, Benchmade, Spyderco, Strider, all great folders. I have one of each brand and they're very good. I'm on the waiting list for a XM-18 but I'm also part of a passaround so we'll see on that.
If you want a big, Busse-esque folder, it's probably the ZT. If you want the finest production folder, it'd be the Sebenza. The Strider is good but a tad overpriced.

:eek::eek::eek::eek:..yes that does say Busse Folder:D

13 old school MSs and folder #2........YOU SUCK! :D Can I be your beneficiary?

Nice!

Cross forum deal spotting is not cool, please refrain from this in the future, thanks.

The ZT 0200 is one of my favorite folders. I also like the BM Skirmish and Mini Skirmish. But if not mistaken, Sebenza is an African word that means Busse doesn't make folders.

What's so great about the XM-18? Personally, I recommend the discontinued Benchmade 733-01 as the best folder.

Personally, and from what has been passed through my hands, I prefer the ZTs. The Hinderer is worth every penny as well though.
I am hoping for an Airkat TORK NVTR for my 10th wedding Anniversary though.

So may recommendations for the XM-18, and no one can say why it's so great? C'mon guys, stick up for your beloved knife. I'll assume it's just a fad until I hear otherwise.

I didn't see that you'd asked, George, but since you have:

1: the entire thing is designed, machined, and built by Rick, who is a bit of a perfectionist. (on gen III knives, due to the ridiulous amount of orders Rick gets, blade grinding is being done outside.)

2: The lock-bar stabilizer on the XM, which is also on the Strider and ZT knives thanks to a licensing agreement, is an invention of Rick's, and is rock solid.

3: The knife is BEEFY, with a huge frame-lock, thick tumbled titanium lock side, and grippy machined g-10 scales.

4: The utilitarian and very attractive spanto tip/grind is also an invention of Rick's, and really makes it a great all-arounder.

5: Rick has a rock-solid warranty and stands by his product with great customer service.

6: Rick also is a firefighter, and as such, offers priority to his fellow public servants, like other FF's, LEO's, and military.

I've only owned a few folders, Emerson, SOG, etc... And the first time I saw an XM18, I didn't like the aesthetics, but after getting a chance to handle a few, I was sold. Rick's knives are the Busses of folders.

I'mGatMan has it covered pretty well, so I'll just add this...

Do yourself a favor & don't rule it out until you handle one! In another part of BladeForums, I noticed an XM-18 passaround thread. I highly recommend that you try to get in on this for a chance to judge for yourself without having to buy one first. It speaks for itself. :)

I carry mine daily. Where I live, even though I am supposed to be allowed to open carry a fixed-blade, my area is just too urban & heavily populated to do so and not expect that eventually, someone who doesn't feel comfortable with your sheath knife will decide to call the police on you. Under the law/ordinance of "Disturbing The Peace", IIRC, any police officer in PA. can still cite you and confiscate your fixed blade, even carried legally if he/she feels it necessary. The XM-18 to me is like having a small fixed-blade that folds... It's that tough, and locks up solid! Close enough to one for what I carry a knife for on an everyday basis.

Everyone is different, with different views on what works best for them, but I have noticed that very few dislike the XM-18, and most rave about the one(s) they have. As for Rick Hinderer... My opinion of him, based on my personal interaction with him, is that he's a great guy who cares very much about making the best knives he can, and his customer service is top-notch. He stands behind his work.

XM-18= Substance... Not flash nor hype.
JMHO YMMV :)

Well, this isnt really in line with the big beefy folders that have been suggested, but the Buck Mayo TNT is really an awesome knife for the $150 you can often find them for here on the exchange. Weighs practically nothing, no choil or unnecessarily long handle so no wasted space in the pocket, nice hollow ground s30v blade, rock solid lock up. Just an all round great little knife.
