Hey guys I need help. I think a Mora Clipper and Opinel no 8 are completely fine for light bush use, like cutting and food prep but everyone I talk to disagrees with me and says I need a 9''+ knife:confused:. Will those two be sufficient or do I need a big knife? No fire prep I have an axe and a bow saw for that :).

Fanglekai, thanks for the speedy response. Do you think the Mora Clipper and Opinel 8 are good choices for what I need them for?

If serious, yes those two knives will do great. So will most knives, if you don't mindlessly bash on them

C_Becker, I am about 3 IQ away from being completely retarded. But thanks for the help, what do you use?

In the USA we have always had this bigger is better overkill Rambo kind of mentality and I suspect your pals are watching too many movies.
The smaller knives you have do all you need and you have the axe for what they might not.

Rhinoknives1, Yea I guess but im Canadian so...Anyway I just need clarification that there isnt some new knife rule that I didnt know about and do you or anyone know the reliability of the Opinel 8 in carbon (Dont care about rust) . Marcinek, Very funny you're still in.

It depeneds. Will a Mora and an Opinel chop down a tree? Most likely not. You need a large chopper for that, so yes, 9" plus.

However, a Mora/folder combo will handle most woods tasks, like feathering, light batoning, and cutting stuff.

spydercobenchmadekai, Nice pictures man and thanks for your input. I don't think I'll get a larger chopper yet I'll just keep using my original setup. My original plan was to pack an axe and Laplander as well as a Mora and Opinel which works well because I don't go on long hikes more like camping, alone in the woods with a little gear. I currently have a job mate boys axe that I got at Canadian Tire for $25, I'm going to re handle it later but for now ill paracord wrap the handle, but I still need a sheath any ideas? (something easy no leather/kydex)

A saw+ hatchet/machete/large batoning knife(whichever works best for you)+a belt knife (like a mora)+your favorite pocket knife is the perfect setup for camping (IMO). Use whatever works best for you!

Happy trails!

and a multi tool...be it SAK or Leatherman, I cant imagine heading into the woods without one. my choices being a Leatherman ST in my pack and a SAK Farmer in my pocket

mountainmist, Thanks man that is a really good response. What do you use besides from what I'm guessing is a Becker.

That's what his mentioned axe is for. The bk9 is really cool, but it doesn't sound like it's what he is after.

How could I forget! I always have a multi tool on me, a very good thing to have daily.

When I go out I tend to have a folding saw (Soon it will be a silky pocket boy), a Becker bk9, a becker bk16/15/mora companion, and a bk14/11/folder.
I could easily get by with a bk16 and a folding saw but I would much rather have the bk9 to split all the wood :D

I carry the bk14 or folder because the bk16 is just a bit big for things like, say, carving a spoon (gave my self a rather nasty cut last night as a result of stupidity and the bk16 being to long).

Hope this helps and God bless!
