I Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone !!!

I refuse mall ninjas all the time. I also work in corrections and its easy for some of the inmate population to catch on with some of the details of your personal life. I've had a lot of guys want to seek me out to buy a knife when they get released. "I don't do that stuff anymore man/ don't know what you're talking about." Etc.

I see no problem with taking orders on here, or anywhere as long as you take a deposit up front that covers materials and be honest with your time frame. If all goes south you've still got a knife to sale made from materials you didn't have to pay for.

It has much more potential to go "deep" south if you take money upfront or give delivery dates. I take nothing from the customer but a request. Doing things this way covers you both. I hurt my back at the beginning of 2012 and was out of the shop for 3-4 months... Then we began planning a move and along with other family issues, I lost about 7 months in total. That would have ruined me(or caused a lot of headaches) if I had given delivery dates or taken deposits. As it stands, I am fortunate to have VERY patient and understanding customers.

To link this back to the spirit of this thread... I have had only one problem customer and was able to politely but abruptly "let them go" for the simple fact that I was not in their pocket.

If you don't want to do it... don't.

I rarely take deposits for materials these days, and I'm real careful about delivery dates. I've built my business to the point that I have a reasonable stockpile of excellent materials on hand. If someone wants a knife with dinosaur oosic and outsourced engraving and gold inlays, they're barking up the wrong tree anyway. That's just not what I do.

I also never know when I'll need to squeeze in a custom sheath job or a quick re-handle into my schedule.

On the other hand, I'm glad that so many makers only take the jobs they like! I do accept custom orders that are outside my "comfort range" in terms of design and technique. I bid such jobs high (money-wise) and long (time-wise) to give myself room to work. It's always better to bid high and under-promise, than to come in over-budget and late.
