Good evening everyone. I am a dummy, and I must apologize and explain myself to Mike Wilson of Wilson Custom Knives.

I said "I'll take it" on 8/22 to this For Sale by Maker topic:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/874564-My-1-Drop-point

This was the reply by WilsonKnives:
Sorry about the delay. It is available. Pay pal is wilson knives@hughes.net and thanks it can go out today Mike
IT'S YOURS, BOB W

Unfortunately that email address didn't work correctly and the payment was sent on August 23 to someone else (someone named "Barry Billings"), who also happens to be a verified PayPal member.

My first thought was to get the payment refunded, and then send it to Mike Wilson. But I realized how unfair it would be that Mike not get his money immediately. So I sent another payment to WilsonKnives just now, requested a refund from "Barry Billings", and will start a PayPal dispute if the money is not refunded soon.

Mike Wilson and I have been in contact this evening via PM and it seems everything is being resolved. Mike, if you did not receive this payment, please contact me asap.

Anyone else have a similar situation with a PayPal payment? If so, how long did it take to get resolved?
Does "Barry Billings" happen to be a BF member? With an email address like that...

Did you try e-mailing the same paypal e-mail address.

Yes, I just did that requesting a refund. Not only from the knives@hughes.net address, but to another contact email address as well.

Hopefully when I wake up in the morning I'll have confirmation from Mike Wilson that he did receive the second payment, and a refund from the wrong guy as well.

In a couple of days I'm headed out of town for at least a month....

Just a tip for all to consider.
When buying a knife, give the seller your paypal address and ask him to send a Money Request for the total amount to your email address.
This way you avoid receiving a paypal email address with a typo in it.

LMT66: Excellent guidance!

Bob W: Thanks for stepping up.....it shows character.

I had no idea there was a problem until this evening. Earlier today I had sent a PM to WilsonKnives to let him know I had not received the knife yet; I wasn't concerned, only wanting to give a heads-up in case there was a shipping or address glitch somewhere. I was quite surprised when he answered back that he had never received the payment.

In regards to the PayPal, I have started a "dispute" and bumped it up to a "claim". This guy "Barry Billings" received the payment nine days ago, along with a note addressed to "Mike." Obviously the payment was meant for someone else, but yet I have never been contacted by Mr Billings. I don't know "Barry Billings" and have never purchased nor agreed to purchase anything from him. I might have not bumped it to a Claim immediately if not for the nine days already passed with no contact.

Well it looks like everything is working out. Wilson Knives received the second payment and has mailed the knife. PayPal has removed the payment from "Barry Billings" and credited it back to my account, although it's listed as "pending until Sept 10."

I've done that a couple times and also been on the receiving end. It's always worked out for me. I think "good" paypal users understand that stuff happens

Great idea indeed. It won't work unless mods insists this is the way a deal gonna be transacted.

Mike,

I left town for a few days for a business trip. The knife was waiting here when I returned this evening.
The knife is a real beauty.
Thank you very much for your understanding, patience, and communications throughout this minor ordeal. I hope we can do business again some day.

As an 'end of the story' wrap up, Barry had a knives@hughes.net email address for his knife business a long, long time ago and probably was the email in his original PayPal account profile. Interesting! More recently he realized that PayPal did not have his newest email address (a few generations beyond the hughes.net one) and noticed this activity going on with the dispute. Figuring there was something like this happening, he "copped" to the dispute so you got your money back without incident.

The wonderful world of Technology and Money Movement via it!
Happy Knife Hunting,
--Vicky
