I see my knife as a...

It depends on the knife itself but most of my knives are

Tools
Playthings
Potential collectibles
Weapons (hopefully I never have to use one as such though)

mine is just a tool and a plaything. they day any of them become more valuable that the price i pay for them they could become collectors items. all of mine get thrown in my pocket. some more than others and i flick my carry knife probably 200 times a day because i have ADD and i always get distracted and need something to play with

For most of the ~50 years I've been carrying and using knives, they have solely been tools.
For the past decade or so, they've kind of morphed into a hobby.

But the knife in my pocket is always there as a tool, not a hobby or a weapon.

1. Tool: I treat my folding knife as a piece of equipment for EDC.

2. Collectible: When a knife gets used enough, it gets mothballed into storage so that I can still take it out and admire its looks.

3. Weapon: Very unlikely, I don't want to get involved in a case of SD with knives, bloody, ugly and costly in terms of injuries, financial and legal consequences.

the knife I'm carrying now is a Emerson CQC 7.
1. tool
2. plaything
3. hobby
4. defensive tool.. I guess.
Ive never needed a knife for defense, but I guess it could be a last resort.

Wouldnt using a knife as a weapon be using it as a tool. If using it to eat makes it a tool (think fork/spoon) would defense be just using it as a tool to defend yourself (gun/punches)?

Yep totally agree. I wanted to put tool first but who am I kidding. I have too many expensive knives for them to all be tools and they end up getting played with more than they're actually used to work. I have a couple of knives that I carry all the time at work and a couple grand in knives that are carried just for fun the rest of the time. They are mostly realllly fun toys for me.

This is the exact stage I'm at now; I have WAY more nice knives than I'll ever be able wear out/use/need etc. Yet I still want more and the price per purchase continues to climb... Lol.

Partially tool, partially hobby kind of thing. I'd like to throw one in... A lucky charm. It's just nice to have that feeling of having the knife on me if I need it. I get the same kind of "naked" feeling if I leave the house with my cell phone.

As far as a weapon goes... I don't think of it as a weapon unless my life is in danger and I have nothing better. Then it's a weapon, but my focus is on never getting to that point in the first place. I don't see why people say, "Never as a weapon." I guess if you want to be worried about legal repercussions while you're life is on the line that's your prerogative. What's that old phrase? Rather be judged by 12 than buried by 6...

Frankly I don't think of the rocks on the ground as weapons either, but if it comes down to it I'll treat them as such.

When I carry one of my knives, I use it to cut something--even if it's just an envelope, a package, a stray thread. So first and foremost, it is a tool. But from there, I think it is:

a plaything (hey, flicking, sharpening and cleaning is fun)
artwork (depending on the knife!)
a collectible (well, I buy more than I need, so I guess I am collecting)
a keepsake
a weapon (doubtful)

1. Tool
2. Play thing

I am lucky that during most of my life I have had access to the outdoors. There are times when a multi tool is perfectly fine for me, many times actually.

I see all my knives as tool > plaything > artwork > collectible > keepsake > weapon

1. Tool
2. Plaything ('cause guys always play with their tools)
3. Hobby (Hey, if you're on here discussing knives, it's a hobby for you)
4.
5.
6.
7.
8. Weapon (seems like there oughta be a bunch of other stuff before weapon)

I'd say depends on the knife.

For instance this knife is always a weapon first. It's for SD and it's not used for anything to keep it as sharp as possible.

OTOH, this fixed VECP is my most used knife in my house building project these days. It would also not make a very good weapon, IMHO.

Here's a idea: I see my knife as a..... time line.

1. Interest, As a small child seeing adults pulling knives from their pocket and using them in day to day tasks.

2. Cool, Getting that first knife as a kid, learning the right way to use/own a multi-blade, little knowing you and steel were going to become companions for life.

3. Tool, After finding out in your youth how handy these things really are, the knife becomes a Tool that is used for decades, In rain, snow, ice & wind storm, floods, field, forest, stream, creek, river, lake, ocean, harvest, etc.

4. Hobby/Collecting. When you acquire that first knife that you like but doesn't get carried or on a regular basis. Like a car that hardly leaves the garage, let alone gets dirty. Or having more blades than you are able to carry throughout the seasons of the year.

5. Enlightenment/Education and being a Grad student at The Blade Forums University of Cutlery, always on the cutting edge of knowledge.
This is when the addiction sets in. Hey, it's OK, many pick up an addiction or two while attending College. :D
You only thought you had a knife hobby/collection, and knew cutlery till you started reading Blade Forums. This where knowledge and collections grow.
