  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

I shot my first gun!!!

Congrats bro.......Remember the feeling you have after shooting your first. When you buy your first, that feeling will be multiplied 1000 times!! Enjoy, be safe and be responsible. Oh yeah.....don't forget to join the NRA.

Keep at it and you'll be surprised how long you can keep this skill.
Last week I took my dad, who's 73 now, to the range with me to shoot my 45.
He's shot it before, but didn't care for the recoil from a 230 grain bullet.
Last year I got into reloading and found a great load for 185 grain SWC bullets.
I reloaded 60 rounds and brought those to the range. He was very pleased with the lighter recoil on these rounds.

After we were done shooting I looked at my dad square in the eyes and said "yep..you still got it!" He put together a 5 round 4" group at 50'! I don't know who was more happy! Its a pleasure going shooting with my dad and its a wonderful feeling seeing him shoot so well even though he is getting "up there".

I cherish all these memories because I know there will come a day when we wont be able to do this sort of thing anymore. Dad taught me how to shoot and my sons will soon be old enough to shoot.

What a WONDERFUL feeling it is!!!!!!

You shot your first gun, now don't stop! Shoot again and again...when you feel like your ready, go out and buy one and keep the tradition alive......our forefathers would be proud!

Pellet guns are a good way to hone your skills. I have a dozen rifles and shotguns, but shoot an air rifle the most. I like to stand next to a river and shoot at things that are floating by. Ive become a decent shot that way.

That's a great grouping for anyone at any age! Good for you for creating more memories with your Dad. You'll cherish those memories always, nobody can ever take them away from you. I lost my Dad years ago, but still hold memories like this fondly.

I'd like to second that. You can learn a lot from the NRA magazines and publications that may help you shoot/hunt better. Local meetings can introduce you to experienced shooters, who will let you try a lot of cool hardware. I eventually took the classes and exams and became certified as an instructor.

The NRA will also help you retain whatever firearms you end up buying.

First shot a 22 on a property, then a shotgun, and moved up to AK's in Vietnam and pistols and revolvers on a range at schoolies. :D

I know plenty of guys whose first experience with a firearm was in the army with an RK62 assult rifle (standard issue at Finnish Army, a AK47 mod). It was fun but kinda scary to watch dudes shoot with their eyes closed :D

Congrats!

Start looking for a .22LR rifle. Inexpensive, cheap to shoot, and a great skill builder.

After that you'll need a shotgun, a .22 handgun, a centerfire rifle, then another shotgun, then another centerfire, a larger handgun, an EBR (Evil Black Rifle), another shotgun...

Congratulations!

I learned to shoot with my grand father almost 30 years ago and have been plugging away ever since.

This may be a verboten statement on BF, but guns are MORE addicting than knives - and usually twice as expensive.

Once you get your first, it's all over.

Again, congrats!

That's awesome bro, it makes me happy to see more people getting into the awesome hobby of gun shooting.

Better late than never. If your really interested take a basic marksman class. It will get you started off right without wasting unnecessary ammo and time. or you can just buy a .22 and practice a lot.

Just be warned that this will become a drain of available cash for the rest of your life. First one gun, then another, then another....and you have to keep feeding them. And wait until you have teenage sons who love to shoot and think that ammo grows on trees. My youngest son thinks the best fun is when he has a .45 in each hand and squeezes them off as fast as he can, without regard for the expense.

Get a .22 rifle while in college, they don't cost much and ammo is not that expensive. And you can get a basic pump shotgun for not a lot of cash, too.
