I sold all my modern folders but one, what did I keep?!

I have lots of nice folders and enjoy them all but I could easily feel well equipped and content with a delica.

Funny you should mention that ,SG I lost my brown Delica 2 days ago, good thing I have a gazillion back-ups am now using the rat avispa, totally love it.....the Delica is definitely a lighter carry, but I love the slim profile and value of the rat avispa

Rat avispa? I thought those were two different knives. Speaking of the rat 1, I had a chance to handle one for the first time at the Blade show. Seemed nice for the price point.

You guys keep saying how great Rat knives are. So, let's see....out of everything I own, these get the most use:

Kershaw Zing (US version),

CRKT Prowler,

Benchmade Grip (full size),

Victorinox / Wenger Soldier

Victorinox Cadet.

Leatherman Wave

I would love to try a Rat knife but, the question is which one? Also, where would it fit in the group of knives listed above?

The rat I is comparable to the full size griptillian. I prefer the rat to the grip personally. The FFG drop point is just perfect IMO

While it is possible to only have one knife by choice, I just can't envision it. I had more than one knife when I was 10 years old and those were traditional slipjoints. I will admit that I really was not "knife crazy" until around 1990 (25 years ago), but I can't see getting rid of knives that I don't use for any number of reasons. Could I be content with only one knife by choice? No Could I live with only one knife? Yes. But I guess the whole purpose of the thread is to tout your favorite Rat II.

Getting rid of knives just because you're getting older makes sense to me, but I can't envision this either unless the value is very high and you could use the money.

The question I have is WHY did you sell or get rid of most of your modern knives? Money? Health? Change in circumstance?

I am not done collecting. My focus has changed to slipjoints. I wanted to raise funds without disrupting my income to expand my slipjoint collection so decided out with the old in with the new. I am also moving and my lady lost her job so I am not in a position to be buying luxury items. I will probably pick up more modern folders down the road when we get settled in our new home.

These are good reasons. My house is a kitten party too by the way. My focus has been shifting slowly (bumpy erratic shift) in a general way toward slipjoints too. I just like them. I pick up most moderns and look at and handle it and like it or them. But I keep going back to slip joints when I fondle folding knives just for the sake of the hobby.

A change in overall focus to traditional knives is a reasonable thing. I know Jackknife has shifted from many knives to a few mostly traditional knives in recent years. Thinking about starting a thread along this vein with a little twist over the usual "if you could only have one knife, what would it be?"

Guess we gotta have priorities. I put together dollar menu combo lunches for $3, cut my own hair, play a $100 guitar, ride a mostly worn out bicycle, drive a 97 light truck and make a big deal about spending the minimum necessary in nearly all things. The exception is knives. If I couldn't carry my Sebenzas or at the very least a Mili, PM or N5 S110 life wouldn't be worth living. ;)

Much love for the rat ll here also, have three and wife edc's the pink one. Just picked up the coyote brown satin blade which was almost impossible to find.

You must buy inexpensive knives if you are giving them away.

Well....

I look at lots of things when I try to talk myself out of a new knife. But for this discussion, the most important one is that a knife is still a tool. It is made to be used, and with that, there is always the possibility (unlikely, but not impossible) that it may get lost, stolen, or broken. The way things work for me, the more I spend on a knife, the more likely that is.

So, with that in mind, I have to ask myself how I would feel if the knife I'm looking at departed from me without my consent. If that would set me back by what I feel is a lot of money (currently, somewhere around $120), then I don't buy it.

Sorry. Zipping it.

What these new cold steels?
You should really get yourself one, they're great Knives! ;)

I wish they'd CNC some grooves into the scales for a better grip, but other than it is a near perfect EDC. I have the Tanto version and I love how thin it is in the pocket...seldom notice it's even there. It has become my favorite beater EDC.

Inexpensive, High Value Great knives like the Rat should be outlawed as a Gateway drug.

Guys, lets just acknowledge that if we own more than a couple of knives, its not because we need to cut more stuff. The first knife would have done that. With each knife we are buying a temporary emotional high, which will soon dissipate. And when it does, we will need another fix.

Truth spoken here. Guess what? I've gone down the same road as the OP and now I'm back to about 20 folders, mostly higher end production. I don't think that will change any time soon either. Talk to me in six months and it might. lol
