I was making the usual rounds of my favorite knife websites this morning and spotted a great find at <a href = "http://www.perkinsknives.com">Sean Perkins'</a> website. When I did my interview of him (see my webpage for that...it's pretty interesting reading) he said he was working on some folders, but at that time he got frustrated and put them aside. Well, apparently the project worked out, and he has two models shown right now. REALLY sweet-looking stuff. They are friction folders, look solid as hell, and are, as usual, completely original. I am trying to beg one out of him for a review, so we'll see if he cracks or not!

Price looks pretty equal to what a lot of custom makers charge for folders. Knowing Sean's work as well as I do, these folders will be on this Earth a hell of a lot longer than you will be, so consider it an heirloom to be passed down! Check 'em out...

Those folders are great!!!

Expensive, but worth it from the looks of them.

Automantic, I find the price for Sean's folders pretty much the same as folders from other custom makers. Remember, too, that you are getting a fully textured piece of A-2 that is differentially heated. If the quality of the folders is anything like his fixed blades, and they are or else Sean wouldn't be selling them, then that really is a bargain. You can read the interview of Sean on my webpage to get an idea on how much work he puts into his knives.

The folders have a cool, interesting look to them, as do his earlier small fixed blades, with the hammer-look texture he gives his work. I especially like the look of the Herveste, though, sort of a Sawby-looking reverse-tanto-with-some-belly knife, but fixed, and with micarta scales. Very interesting, indeed. If I don't expend my custom knife piggy bank at the Wolverine Custom show this weekend, I'll have to give Mr. Perkins a call.

Thanks for the tip, Steve, and how's the titanium ring project going? I haven't heard anything for a while.

DonL, check out my webpage for a full-length review of Sean's Herveste model. It's a great knife. Just follow the URL below and you'll find the additional link in the navigation frame on that page. It's a decent read, if I do say so myself!

As far as the ring goes, we made some good progress early in the project, but sizing was a problem. I sent Neil a size I thought would work, but he was real busy with hunting season, so the project was put on the backburner. In the meantime he isn't on the shop floor anymore, so he'll have to make a special trip down there to get the steel blank so I can test the size, then again to do the final titanium version...

interesting desgin alright. I don't think he has enough cutting edge for that size handle if you ask me. I like it when they cram as much blade in as possible.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

The handle has to be quite a bit longer than the blade in a friction folder. That's not necessarily a bad thing; some people like short blades for precise work and want a good long handle to get a grip on.

I could see a return of the friction folder ... there are real advantages to the design.
