I started up my Mosquito Magnet Pro tonight....

St. Louis is the pits in the summer. I went for a half hour jog yesterday (90*, 67%) and I got a lovely 6 misquito bites. The real pain about it is that one is right behind my left ear! It's about to drive me nuts!

I bought the Coleman Mosquito Deleto today. It wasn't near as much as the mosquito magnet pro. I hope it works. The mosquitos here in Tennessee are terrible.

Minnesota can be bad depending on the location in the state. For instance, right now I live within walking distance of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, where they are common but not blotting out the sun yet. I was out for a few hours each for the last two evenings and only have an accumulated 15-16 bites (they generally leave me alone though).

I used to live in more rural Minnesota though, the infamous "Lakes Area", where stagnant water and dead fish were considered yard decor. We were in the process of building fallout shelters for the mosquito clouds that periodically come and go. Citronella candles stand no chance as the mass of mosquitoes swirling around displaces enough air to readily put out the flames.

OK OK I'm exaggerating slightly. I talk to lots of folks and most complain about how especially bad their mosquito situation is, but I have yet to see worse.

When I was growing up in Minnesota there was a 3-4 hour window around sunset that if you dared go outside you had to be careful not to _inhale_ them. We lived in a rural are near lots of standing water. Slathering on repellent will help (bites) , but they still swarm you. Very unpleasant.

On topic: We had a zapper that lasted a month before quitting, and was constantly 'zapping' and it never seemed to do any good...

fracmeister,

A GRAND (!) for mosquito eradication!?!?
Makes me question whether the $'s might not have been better spent as bribes! Surely these fellows must be of such size that you could persuade them to sit down with you at the table and accept payment to vacate your property.

Looks like I'll be taking my Coleman Mosquito Deleto back to Lowes for a refund. I noticed they are now $40 cheaper than when I bought mine. I asked the lady at the counter if they had a sales price gaurantee. She said only within seven days of purchase. She said i could bring it back for a refund within 30 days though. She said they have had many, many returns on these. The one I got hasn't got one mosquito on it.

Oh well, At least I can get my $200 back.

Anyone have any input on the Black & Decker Mosquito Halo??

Supposed to have an effective radius of 100 feet. Uses a cartidge of scented bite inhibitor called Linalool that supposed to last 30 days. Device is about $20.00 direct from B&D and replacement cartidges are 9.99 for two carts.

My son uses an AirSoft Glock28 for mosquito control. Really messes up a skeeter but man it hurts hurts when he catches them "in the act" on me.

The worst place I've experienced for mosquitos was Sugarloaf Key. During the day, if you swatted you arm, you could easily kill six at a time. At night it got worse. In case Frac thinks he's spent a lot on killing them, there is a bat tower on Sugarloaf that was built to house bats to eat the mosquitos. Depending on which version you believe, the bats left immediately never to return, or never showed in the first place, so it was a total bust.

I can't help with the yard-wide methods for mosquito control but if you want them to stay away from you personally here is a couple suggestions.

After many a trip to the boundary waters in Minn. there are three truly effective methods for keeping the bugs away.

1. Don't go outside. (Doesn't really solve the issue)

2. Deet (The higher the % of deet the better. Only apply to skin, not
clothing.)

3. Permethrin ( This product is sold in aerosol cans next to deet. You apply it to your clothing and let it dry and it repels most forms of biting insects for about three weeks per application. Great stuff if you are going to be out in the woods for long periods but not reasonable for multiple sets of clothes.)

I hope your yard products work well!!!

If you guys want to experiment with mosquitoe killers you can use my backyard up here in Fairbanks Alaska.

I went for a hike saturday, long sleeves, long pants, head net, and bug dope on back of hands. Bugs? what bugs?

I've lived in over 10 states and seen the worst mosquitoes in Alaska, Southern Oregon Cascades, and during certain times Florida.
