I still like the tacticools, but traditionals seem to be calling out to me!

Pocket clips tear stuff up, hook on things and drag the knife out of the pocket. Got tired of that. Real, real tired of that. Gone back to "my roots", too. 1 or 2 blade jacks, and a Tinker keep me taken care of. Keep my multitool handy, but I don't carry it much anymore.

If I find myself in a situation where I'm needing a knife one-handed and fast all the time, I'll go back to carrying a sheath knife again.

It's also handy for saltwater fishing where you need the quick one hand opening and it's easy to clean.

I'm a bit curious about this. Growing up in South Florida, I've done a LOT of saltwater fishing in my life, both ocean and river. For years I've carried an Endura clipped to my pocket, and either a SAK Classic or a Leatherman Micra or Squirt. I can't remember EVER needing the Endura. But I used those little guys constantly for trimming line, etc. Cutting bait and rigging ballyhoo? That's where the grimy filthy bait knife gets used. Cleaning fish - a filet knife.

Don't get me wrong, to this day I'd carry that Endura on the ocean ....... it's just that I'm not exactly sure what I need it for. :o

I'm in the same boat Silent Hunter.

I've been collecting tacticool folders for a while, and I love em.
Whilst on holiday recently I bought a Schrade Old Timer stockman, and since then I've changed from carrying a CQC-10 and the Subcom, to carrying the Subcom and the Schrade.

working in a supermarket environment, and opening a lot of boxes on the shop
floor I find that a quick one hander is invaluable, hence the Subcom, but anything worth taking time for gets the slippie.

I have bought a Henckels off ebay, and should get that soon I hope, then I'll put down the chinese made schrade for solingen blades.

when I manage to put together some cash I'll fix myself up with a top of the range slippie, but until then I'll wait.

I think I'll get a boker trance, to replace the subcom, and some form of spyderco or benchmade to pound with and then keep the slippie as the go to knife.

if I really want SD I have a Surefire E2D Defender that carries in my jacket pocket that'll do the job.

happy hunting

This thread really echoes a lot of the thoughts that I have been having lately. In the past three or four months I have sold off a lot of my Tacticools and gone back to carrying much the same things that I did 10 years ago. I too was buying new knives just because they were new, without much thought about if they actually gave me any advantage. Most of the time they didn't. I would go around with knives clipped to 2 or 3 pockets and clipped in my waistband. All most of them ever did was get caught on things and snag me up, or worse, get left behind hanging on a chair or seatbelt.

For the most part these days I carry a Boker Trance or Spyderco ZDP Delica for those times that I need to make a quick cut, a Victo Explorer with Stayglow scales for my main utility knife, a KaBar TDK knife in a pocket sheath in case I need to do any heavy / dirty cutting, and I Victorinox Vagabond on a split ring with my USB drive in case I need to be very discrete for some reason.

I love the look of the traditional knives, but I just don't seem to keep them in my pockets for too long. I guess the main reason is that I don't like things flopped over down in my pockets. I had a Victorinox Pioneer modded with a pocket clip by Bill Evans just for that reason.

mnblade - one hand operation for trimming line is the bomb. Of course it's probably just me - fumblefingers.

Endura is kind of large for that though. I tend to prefer the size of the delica. I have a leatherman I use quite often, but not for the knife blade part of it.

I like both classic pocket knives and modern tactical folders. It's nice to see that there are other knife people out there that can appreciate both old and new designs.

One handers are invaluable for fishing, especially from a boat. Sometimes the boat is rocking and I'm trying to hold the railing, my pole, my beer, my bait, all while trying to cut line. That's when a one hander is a blessing. I usually take my Kershaw Scallion and my Victorinox Tinker when fishing. The Scallion for cutting line and the Tinker for tinkering with fishing reels. I pay the crew a few bucks and they clean my fish with their fillet knives.

All that talk about tacticals, moderns, and traditionals. Hmpf, Chuck Norris doesn't need a knife. He just looks at what he wants cut and it cuts itself. :D

Interesting to note that as many people shift from modern/tattycools to traditionals the modern knives get moved over the dirty duty. Working on the car, the lawn mower, cutting up a bunch of nasty stuff, use the modern it seems and take better care of the traditional, even if the modern cost two or three times what that slippie did. I know I've gone that way. I usually toss the Kershaw Ken Onion in my pocket if I'm going to be working on the car. I'll abuse it more than my slippies. I keep my slippies for pure cutting and enjoyment. I certainly don't hesitate to cut with them on a daily basis. I just don't scrape old gaskets off, get them covered in grime, or cut in areas where there's a good chance the blade it going to hit something metal after it goes through.

Well, okay, I used to use my SAK Swiss Champ for a lot of rough things, including the occasional hammering of battery leads onto terminals. It shows it too. But, now I use my plastic and steels for the ugly stuff I just can't bring myself to use my slippies on. No doubt, the slippie would do fine work. I just enjoy the slippies for more than just reasons of cutting.

Yeah lately I have felt the yearning for a nice multi-blade slippy. I have several of Todd Davidson's fine single blade knives. I also have have quite a few Tacs. I really sort of miss the Old Timer and Buck stockmans that I had in the early 70s. Steven
