I sure wish they'd stop making great knives that have RECURVE blades

yeah, they're harder to sharpen, but recurves are ideal for fixed blade fighters because their edges have greater surface area per unit of blade length, making for more damage with each thrust or slice. they cut more comin' & goin'...

here's my all-time favorite fixed blade, the walter brend model 2:

double'edged perfection... woof woof :D!!!
heh, ^^that's worth repeating, especially for those who have not yet been "brended".

Well, say that you are stuck out there in the field with a recurve - with time to prepare, what would be the ideal hone to have along with you?

The little Gatco Gatstix pocket sharpener works great for me. It's like a miniature Sharpmaker with two pairs of ceramic rods in a 2"x2"x3/8" package. Weighing only an ounce or two makes the Mini Gatstix very portable. I touch up other people's knives with it all the time. I actually almost never have to touch up my own because I rotate a half dozen EDCs and keep em all razor sharp, but the 1/8 round rods (med and fine) would do a fine job maintaining my Amphibian. It's the only recurve I own and I love it. Hopefully Tom will get around to my large TNT someday, It's gonna be a recurve..:)

The other option I've been considering for portable use for me would be an DMT Diafold diamond sharpener. While it's traditional to carry a small natural stone, considering todays super steels, I find the ceramic or diamond sharpeners to be a better option.

Get the Gerber diamond rod at Walmart.

It retracts into its aluminum handle, and carries like a pen. the 'pen style handle' gives you something to hold onto as well.

I have mine with me all the time. it beats the DMT Diafold rod in ease of carry. The Gerber also is flat on one side, and round on the other, with a groove for doing hooks.

For six bucks, you can't beat it!

I wasn't clear, I didn't mean the DMT rod, I meant their Diafold Dual Sided model with the coarse, fine option. I think it might be the best overall portable sharpener, but that Gerber diamond rod does sound useful, especially considering the price.

I have a Speed Bump from Kershaw and used it to rip up carpet and it was awesome, but I could not sharpen it. I sent it to Kershaw and they took about 6 weeks to get it back to me and now I rarely use it. I really like it but hate the thought of dulling it and having to wait so long to have it sharpened (Kershaw does it for free).

I never got a BM 710 because of the blade shape. Recurves; never liked em, don't need em.

Ya...I'd hate to have to slaughter another human without the unique cutting abilities of a recurve blade...

what bullshit

I have no problem with sharpening recurves or other blade grinds or shape after some practice. It's all part of the sickness. Field maintenance of the recurve edge isnt hard either. Diamond rod or my stropping pad does it all the time.

I have a bunch of recurves because I like the way they cut. I sharpen them on the edge of a charged leather pad. Works like a charm. This method produces a razor sharp edge and just required a little practice to master.

I really like these and I didn't have any problem reprofiling this.

Or this.

I ground the the recurve out of one of my BM 710's. It is now a much more practical (useful) knife.

I like recurves a lot. I use the corners of the sharpmaker and a strop. Why else would I have 3 Tyrades, 0200, 030x x2, RJM Overkill, and a couple others.

I really like the way they cut!

if you want someone else to sharpen your speed bump, i have a quick turnaround for basic v edge or convex edge sharpening, usually the same day in i try to get them back out the same day (except saturdays).

regrinds are different and time on them can vary.

you "recurve haters": recurves aren't going anywhere, they were designed for a reason and they sell...so you can't sharpen them as simple as a straight edged blade, well boo hoo...

if said "great knife" was designed with a recurve, then it wouldn't be a great knife anymore without it's recurve; it would be something completely different.

i think one of the most stupid things i've seen done is when someone buys a recurve knife and grinds away the recurve; then declares what a wonderful improvement the blade is now...HEY, WAY EASIER AND CHEAPER TO JUST BUY A NICE BLADE WITHOUT A RECURVE TO BEGIN WITH, NO?

you don't like recurves don't buy one; it's not like you don't have HUNDREDS of choices to choose from.
