I suspect this Case is not really Case?

In my search for Yeller bone, I found this beauty and had to have it. Its a split back whittler 3.5 inch with "Bomb"? shield? Its had non standard Case XX 1994 stamp. Is this a Queen? In any event its just great!

Very nice, can you post a few photos of the backsprings?

Thanks,

Kevin

Interesting stuff! What was the purpose of Case Classics? Case was still making a ton of knives weren they?

This is quoted from page 124 of the 'Case Classics' section in my copy of the 'Pocket Knife Trader's Price Guide, Volume 8' (by James "Buzz" Parker & Ed Henley; copyright 2007):
"The idea behind the program was for some of the earliest periods of Case knives to be represented, not only in style and stampings, but in quality. The earliest period to be represented was the Case Brothers era, 1889-1905, the W.R. Case & Sons period from 1905-1915, the Case Bradford era from 1915-1920, the Case Tested era from 1920-1940, and the Case XX 1940-1964 era."

Jim Parker was known as "The Father of the Knife Collecting Hobby". He was also the owner of Case for a time. I believe he started the Case Classics to manufacture "New" pocket knives that would not only appeal to collectors but also BE collectable in themselves. Parkers history in the American Knife Industry is quite colorful, and he did have his hand in a Lot of things,if not everything. Everything but Frost Cutlery,LOL. But that's a whole 'nother story!

Dave.....

Just prior to Jim Parker's ownership of Case the quality had begun waning and financial they weren't in good shape and hence Parker came in and purchased/owned Case for a short period ...and this was one of those ideas to spur business....yes Case was still putting out a lot of knives

I don't think Case had any interest in the Case Classics. When Jim unloaded W.R. Case he retained many older Case trademarks. There must have been some legal reason to sub the licensing to Blue Grass, but I don't know it. The large saddlehorn, large congress, and gunboat are the only patterns I know that Case won the bid on producing; the rest were Queen. Seems like Jim later sold or gifted the trademarks back to the factory.

I don't want to derail the thread, but please tell more, I am interested. I thought he started Frost, ie, Parker Frost. Please either email me or start another thread, I don't want to derail Dave's thread.

Doing some more reading in the guide I quoted, and he (Buzz Parker, Jim's son) mentions that they had a lot of trouble selling the Case Classics through retailers, and prospects didn't initially look good for the success of the line. Along came eBay, and all of a sudden, sales took off. He largely credits eBay for the popularity of the line (now), and the subsequent increase in 'collector' value. Sorta weird sometimes, how things can turn on a dime, largely by chance.

Congrats on the whittler Dave, it's sweet!

Reminded me of my Queen maple whittler, now I know why.

I've only managed to read the first 5 pages of that other thread so far, but it really is fascinating, and shocking
