I think Buck needs to make a butterfly knife

I stumbled upon this thread doing some research, and have chosen to Bring this thread back from the dead...to point out it exists. I was at a local knife show and one of the dealers actually had a Buck USA balisong/butterfly knife. Talking to him about it apparently it was a one of from the Buck custom shop years ago. It was even marked 1 of 1. But still cool to think that Buck did actually make (at least one) butterfly knife.

Doesn't count without words.... :):):)
yeah ... yeah ... I missed it is a daRn zombie thread ... :(
Since you asked ....
Basically, I think even if Buck contracted with a maker of Balisong/Butterfly knives and put "Buck" on them, it would be a mistake.
Buck's target consumer doesn't use a Balisong/Butterfly knife to peel and process game for the freezer; big. small or fowl, or to clean fish. They would alienate more customers than they would gain.

It would probably also be cost prohibitive to come out with a totally new knife of the pattern/type. I doubt it would be anything like bringing out a switchblade/automatic 110/112.

I also doubt there is a huge market for the pattern/type, at least in the USA. If there were, Shirley (ref the movie 'AIRPLANE' and Leslie Neilson's use of "Shirley") Case and a couple others would offer them? Does Spidie still make them?

With the down turn in SFOs I would think adding more models would slow things down farther than they are now. I’d rather Buck put the production effort into the main line knives and current models than adding an odd kinda out there type. I’ll be glad when things get straightened out and back on track.

Fair enough on the picture, I am a complete luddite when it comes to technology, but I will see if I can't get some help to post some pictures of the Buck Butterfly. For now you will have to settle for a poor description. It was made by Leroy Remer and bears his "LR". Its also marked BUCK USA and 1 of 1. It is a 3" mirror polished blade with mother of pearl inserts in the handles. All and all a pretty knife.

And as to the hunting use, there have been many attempts to have butterfly knives used as hunting knives. In the 80's a lot of the import companies were pushing skinning butterfly knives. Some are quite interesting. If you are familiar Walter Erickson he has a custom balisong maker active around the 80's who was a serious hunter, he made many very interesting butterfly hunting knives. Including some that were double bladed so you would have two skinning knives with essentially both blades being a full tanged fixed blade knife. (I may need to post a picture to make my description make sense). So it has been done, and Buck could do it. I think it would be more of a "would customers really buy it" type deal.
BTW I love your sharpener, that is cool!

Sounds like a handmade version, possibly a project by Leroy. He is talented enough for sure.

kershaw makes an american made bali for 120 bucks. Buck could make one under that price range im sure. if they made one I'd hope it would have a pocket clip, 4" blade, spring latch, and screwed bearing pivots at the minimum. id grab a handful of them as I like balis.

A pocket clip would be a winner.
