I think Double wrap on my folders is a waste of foil when I heat treat. I remember Dan saying something about making a boat and setting the blades in them ,but I can't remember if he uses it over and over. Hope you see this post Dan. As always Thanks for any information folks.

"Making a boat" out of foil ? If its the same foil I'm thinking about the whole purpose of it is to prevent oxidation and decarburization when heat treating. That means you SEAL the blade in the foil and sometimes add a "getter" (machining chips that will attract the oxygen in the foil bag).

The first wrap is sealed mete I am talking about Double Wrapping the blades and springs . Example I wrap and seal all blades and springs separately. Then I take the blades and wrap them again in foil together.
I do this with the springs also. I think the second wrap can be used over again and DOES NOT have to be sealed. I have never tried it but I think Dan and some others do this.

Any leaks in the foil can cause decarb. This can get messy depending on the item you are heat treating. More clean up in needed to get the part back to a usable stage.

Glen, I just single wrap my blades with a very small piece of paper in a corner away for the blade (I had paper stain two blades deeply when it rested on them). I handle the foil with care to avoid making holes, and I double fold the edges sealing them tight with the smooth face of a hammer. Blades have been coming out clean.

I single wrap them and put a cigarette butt in the package (gotta find some kind of use for em :)), double fold the edges and use a wooden roller to seal them. Never any decarb and they are easily cleaned up.
For blades over 2000° I use Hi Temp foil that goes to 2400°.

Single wrap all the way. I triple fold two sides and double fold the remainder. More than one layer makes it more difficult to get a consistant quench.

Ok ,now its clear, but one wrap is all you need . But the proper getter is machining chips . Paper and cigarette butts ?? weird.

The combustables are placed in the packet for the purpose of expiring the oxygen in the packet (decarb - ya know). Don't use much; about a square inch of CLEAN paper. I use brown grocery store bag paper, being careful not to use the part that is glued.

I have a roll of what I would guess is insulating material. It's about 18" wide and has asbestos sandwiched between it. One side is stainless foil one side is aluminum foil. Free to any brave soul that can use it. Just pay the shipping, its probably 60lbs.

mete,

Your post about the 'getter' went over me the first time I read it. Then I remembered my old vacuum tube days. You're an old electronics guy, right??

glen
the foil can be used 2 times...
make the boat out of the once used foil
that goes inside the new full coverage that
goes on the out side.
if you cool it like I posted you'll quench just fine..

rlinger,I'm a metallurgist and amateur radio guy. Getter is the proper term because it "gets "oxygen. Of course there are those on the forum who are probably to young to know what a vacuum tube is .

Winston Select Lights butts must be a "getter" cause they sure work for me :) Course I haven't heat treated but about 8k blades using them :) Damn, I need to quit smoking...
