I think I bought a not so Spyderco.

Well, I think it finally happened. Fairly cartain that I have purchased a Spyderco that has a replaced blade. I bought it on an online auction site that you all know well. Like an idiot I did not notice until the bidding was over that it is labled as blade unmarked. It was listed as a Spyderco Military C36 PE. The blade profile looks correct, but I have never seen one that is unmarked. Also, the grind marks on it do not look as clean as I would have expected.

Can not wait to get it in and take a look at this possible piece of junk. Just wish I would have paid better attention.

I guess we will see. I will post pictures from the listing later. At least it was cheaper than a new one.

Thanks,

Adam

There is an ebay seller that is known to sell “frakenspydies” knives kitbashed from the spyderco parts bin.

That is great to know. Maybe I can find an actual military blade from someone, or have a custom smith builder make me one. Either way, I guess I will learn a lesson.

I would post the listing, but I do not think we are allowed to do that. I can post some pictures later when I get home.

Thanks,

Adam

I guess I missed a little informaiton in the listing to where he said the blade "may have been reworked". I bid from my phone since my internet was down and that little bit of information did not come up.

Yay,

Adam

If the seller was travis... or discountjds, it was most likely put together out of parts that left Spyderco in someone's lunchbox.

Damn! I wish more people knew about that guy! Then maybe he would go out of "business." I hate it when I hear he did it again to somebody. There are a bunch of threads about this guys "Spydercos" over on the Spyderco forums in the "Fakes" section.

Maybe there is somthing I can do with you. I guess there really is nothing I can do with Ebay or Paypal since he really did not lie about anything. He just was not honest. If anyone wants to see the listing let me know and I can e-mail the info to you.

Considering you have no idea what steel, or even whether the blade has been heat treated, no, it was not a good deal. Spyderco, as has been noted, does not sell knives with "sterile" blades. Seller does cover his rear pretty well, and I'm not sure if PayPal would consider something which could not have been legally obtained to be worthy of a refund for fraud, but they might.

Is it just me, or does the blade look like it's been ground unevenly (differently) on each side? Looks like full flat grind on the front, and not quite so on the back (sabre-ish; look at the grind near the hole). Also, the vertical grind line on the front looks more or less centered on the Spydie hole, and offset more towards the handle on the back.

Yeah, like I said I bid on my phone and did not notice all this before hand. I know better than that, but I messed up. I am not even sure yet if the handle parts are real or not. The G10 looks correct, but who knows.

I think at a minimum I will write a nice little letter to him. I am not sure that I can qualify this as negative feedback, but I can tell you he will do no better than neutral.

The only thing I may be able to call him out on is how the item is listed. He says it is a Spyderco Military when obviously, to me now, it is not.

I may just have to eat the money and live and learn. Maybe if all the other parts are correct I can find someone with a spare blade. Who knows.

This is actually what caught my eye first when seen in large pictures. If someone sells something and truly does not know what it is, I would not be upset. The thing is, I am pretty sure he knows exactly what he is doing and that pisses me off.

I hate to put it this way, but considering it's a knife rather than, say, a mechanical pencil, I'd toss it. Just the cost of the Emergency Room co-pay alone if there's an accident would be more than the loss on the bogus knife. :(

I have no idea if eBay will make any effort to make this right for you, but this is the sort of thing that needs to be called out specifically in the feedback remarks (i.e., "blade looks unprofessionally reground", or something to that effect). Hopefully, other shoppers will take note of it and steer clear of this guy.

I hope this works out for you, one way or another. Best wishes to you.

Dave
