I Think I Got Suckered!

Just an FYI for anyone who is selling on any forum.

I had a guy email me regarding a knife I had up for sale here on the forum. He didn't post on the forum so I don't know his screen name. He sent me an email. He said he was an old retired guy on a fixed income. He had been interested in this particular knife for some time but could not afford it because of his financial situation. He made me an offer and I thought, ok I'll cut the guy some slack as I can relate to his situation because my Dad is on a fixed income. So I email the guy back and tell him ok I'll sell it for that price. Later I get a reply back from this guy asking about another possibility, he likes another knife I have up for sale and would I consider selling both knives for price (which now is selling both knives for less than my asking price) as he thinks he can "swing" that one. I emailed him back stating that I needed to get the asking price because I'm working on another knife purchase but if he is still interested in the first one, I would still sell it to him for that price. I had some other things going on here and I was sidetracked so I wasn't paying much attention to the details. I later get an email from PayPal that I have received payment from this guy. Since I was heading out, I went ahead and packaged up the knife and shipped it out. Later that afternoon, I was going through my emails and checking on the status of the knives and the "lighbulb" went off (finally)! Wait a minute, if he could afford to buy two knives, why couldn't he afford to pay the asking price of the first one?

SUCKER!

Anyways while I was checking my email, I saw that the PayPal payment he sent was for $3 less than the price we agreed upon. I had already shipped the knife out (because I already read that he sent payment). I emailed him and told him the knife was on it's way and that he did not send payment in the amount that we agreed upon. I haven't heard back from him yet.

SUCKER #2!

Now, because I was being kind hearted and wanted to help out another "knife person", I think I got suckered.

Lesson 2: Make sure the price is agreed upon by both parties.
Lesson 3: Make sure that when you receive payment, that it is correct.
Lesson 4: Wait until the payment is received and in the right amount.

LESSON 1: DON'T FALL FOR HARD LUCK STORIES.

So if you get an email from someone telling you their hard luck story, and they want to buy something from you for a lesser price than your asking price, DON'T FALL FOR IT!

Because of this one individual I will never cut a deal for anyone else who tries to give me a hard luck story.

I wasn't out that much $, but it's the principle of the thing. Thanks, guy. I will not be doing any business with you again. For anyone else who may have received a similar email, PM me or email me and I will provide the real name and address of this person so nobody else gets took.

It's just a variant on the poor armed forces guy about to ship out.

Random strangers cannot be allowed to engage our sympathy. If it were someone from the forums, you'd already know if they were legit. Someone popping up from nowhere isn't worth dealing with. I would have hesitated to sell him the knife at full price.

But like you say, he just blew it for anyone else who might really need a break.
"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

I know exactly how you feel. I have been a sucker for a hard luck story...probably will again. I am a softy.

Don't let a few bad apples spoil you on everyone!

garyz: No.

If someone has had a similar email and you want to make sure it's not the same guy, PM me.

Once I know that he has received the knife, and he doesn't respond back to my email regarding the "short changed" payment, I will post his real name here on the forum.

Wow! That just wrong of him/her in so many ways. Sorry to hear folks will do like that.

Here is the correspondence:

Buyer: Hi, I have always wanted one of these but being an old retired guy on a tight monthly income I have never been able to afford one. I was wondering if you could take $78 for this knife. That is really all I have to spend. Thanks

My Response: Not a problem. I really want to get these sold because I'm
not sure how long the knife I'm looking for will be available. Let me know and I'll get it packaged up.

Buyer: Hey Rick, One more possibility. Could I get the Benchmade and the Kershaw Starkey Ridge for $125.00? I love them both and that will stretch me thin but I think I can do it. Thanks again.

My Response: Hi(Buyer), I can afford to let the Apparition go for that price but I need to get more for the Kershaw. If you're still interested in the Apparition, send PayPal payment to: (my PayPal address.)

Buyer: Hi Rick, Give me your paypal address and I will send the money. My address will be on the payal information. Thanks

My Response: Hi, (Buyer). I'll get her packaged up for ya.
Thanks, RickW

Buyer: Rick, Send the money for the Benchmade. If anything changes on the Kershaw let me know. Nice working with you. Thanks, Buyer

After I found out that he short changed me on the payment,

Hi, (Buyer). Got your PayPal payment. Package is off and on it's way to you.

Just a side note, I thought we agreed on $78, you sent $75.

RickW

Haven't heard from him since.

Bad. Hope package has tracking - this is the kind of person that will get the knife, deny it and do a charge-back with PayPal! :grumpy:

You can file a greivance with PayPal? :o

Sorry about your bad buyer experience.

Best regards,

I've got Delivery confirmation on the package. As soon as I know it was delivered I will post his info. I'm half expecting him to contact me with "where's my knife". I'll wait and see.

I hope the $15 was worth his reputation here and on some other forums.

I thought the price was 75 USD as well.... I saw your for sale post on another forum and was thinking of the Kershaw (it was my first "hitech" folder many years back...) and would swear the price was 75.. But maybe it was another knife...

David

David, it was another knife, the Apparition -- I got the Kershaw Starkey Ridge for 75, if that's the one you mean.

pkdmslf Sir, I'm fairly new here and the title of your thread caught my eye.
My hopes are to be able to trade with a person like yourself.
A person with "principles", that's what makes-up our character.

Don't think you were "suckered," buy you kindness.
I think your kindness with be met 10-fold.

Good Luck with your future dealings.

Best Regards,
RV

Follow Up: I checked the USPS tracking and the knife was delivered to him yesterday at 9:50AM. I guess I will not expect any further contact from him. If he has read this post, he knows I'm not too happy with the transaction. On that note for future reference to anyone else who receives a hard luck story from this guy, here is his info as I know it:

Three dollars is not a bad price for you to learn something about your character. I have had many lessons cost me much more.

I am glad to read that you have a sense of empathy and compassion. I hope it serves you very well in your daily life.
