I think I have a Problem with the RMD

I always love seeing those solid bolt hand-smoothed variants you post Mulder. So nice

My problem is they keep multiplying.
How many do you have to have before people will think you're nuts??
I've got at least a couple dozen with one that just showed up today from our good friend Dave Brown.

Very nice, congrats.

These sort of pics are most hepful, to discern the slight styling differences among the variants.

I really like the crisp grind lines, high sabre, and shorter ricasso of the SWATManDu, #4 in pic 1, compared to the BIG (?) RMD just below it. Maybe some regrets for not getting one.

In the bottom pic, that full flat grind is great.

Which handle do you prefer, and why?

My general beef with the ManDu family blades is the thickness immediately behind the edge. You can change the edge angles easily, but you can't really change that thickness without a regrind of the blade.

Are any of those thinner at the edge?

resinguy, to be frank all you really need is a simple relief bevel to reduce the thickness behind the edge… not sure if I would consider that a regrind as you are just adding another bevel to bridge the two existing planes rather than planing down the existing primary grind (WAAAY more labor/skill intensive and most resort to power tools).

I would suggest viewing production knives such as these as a blank canvas, where as boxed they are basically a sketch of what you see in the end…. getting out the grindstones/grinder is the only real way to get the sort of specs you seek without seeking out true custom makers who will build to your specs.

I know most here would scoff at such things since it may void the warranty/lower resale values but the reality is the value of having a tool that is well suited to your tastes is worth far more than the potential risks… often times a few simple and straightforward tweaks can get you there if you pick the right model as a starting point.

I can understand your problem..that knife just feels like perfection...for a utility camp style knife, I don't think there is anything better. an the ergos of that handle...mmm

Mulder, you do have a problem!
There is no drop point RMD in your pics!
Then there's BeefManDu, JackManDu, RMD LEx that are missing too!
You've got to get your act together, either post pics if you were holding out, or () get them if they're not in your stable!

Mulder, still love the Badger collection, but the RMD's are looking GOOD with all that Tan Canvas!!

Mulder, here is another variant you could look for: it was skinny, too, at 0.16":

That is killer, OK, who has it wand wants to donate it to my collection???

Now Resin Guy, as to your question about my fav handle lets just say the handles are all the same with the big difference being feel in hand, I've always been a big fan of canvas for the grip it provides and that is true here as well with the textured handles getting the top spot for grip and smooth for looks. The dyed smooth wood handles are my least fav as they are too slippery in hande. The textured G10 on these is pretty good with no sharp edges that I hate on a lot of G10 handles. I wouldn't hesitate to grab any of them and be happy that I have with me the greatest knife ever designed and mfg by Busse. You guys that know me know I have a few SHBA's and SHSH's but my go to is the RMD of some sort 99 out of 100 times.

Thanks for all the compliments and idea's guys, I may have to start looking for some variants to add and maybe one day get a group pic.

Looks like ya need a RMD bowie variant, and an orginal run RMD too (they had swedged spines). :D
Let the enabling begin! ;) :)

I really liked the swedged version- surprising how a small change makes a big difference sometimes.

Been thinking I need a trailing point/persiany variant.

Beutiful little family of Rats you got their. The thing about though, the have to gnaw. In this case they're gnawing on your wallet lol!

Nice collection Mr. M! Handles? I do prefer the straight one's, with TAC's my best in hand. Would love to someday own an ASH1 with TAC's.

Perhaps named the Steel Heart-a-TAC?

Ya know, Mulder, for a guy who lives out on the end of the continent and never gets to shows, you seem to do OK collecting.

There's a lesson for you other piglets.

OK, so I'm still liking that FFG variant, and the SwatMD.

There are lots of reasons to like the RMD. I would like to find a full flat infi version. Around .125 thick.

Wow Mulder! I remember around the time if the SWATmandu release, you saying how the RMD surpassed the SHBA as far as your favorite Busse(kin) goes, and I figured you were on your way to building a serious collection of them, but even expecting it, I'm impressed! That is an awesome assortment of RMDs!

Super cool  [emoji106]

Can't wait to see where your RMD collection is at a year from now....
