I think I may be done

I fall firmly in the 3-1/2-ish inch camp...
3-1/2" is definitely a great size, but I also find 3-1/4" and 3" to be great sizes as well.
Honestly all the size ranges of 3.5 or less are great, and I can appreciate all regardless of which I'm starting to favor most.

I love my medium Texas jack so much , and even though it's bigger than the knives I'm slowly leaning towards i really cannot call it too big at all.

One thing I've noticed is that my cutting needs are generally pretty light and minor so grip and such really dont matter much to me.

Thats the elephant of reality in the room. Most, if not all little cutting jobs you'd use a pocket knife for, is fairly light duty.

At times I've lived with a Vic classic as my sole EDC if I was on vacation someplace flying in without checked bag. I got by just fine for a week that included fishing, heavy drinking, snorkeling, trimming the end off a nice Dominican cigar, more drinking, more fishing including cutting squid for bait. That razor blade sharp little knife did well and I survived the vacation just fine. And even a peanut class pocket knife will zip open a fish belly for cleaning as well as a larger knife. Gave the knife away when flying out.

The truth is, theres a lot of over built tacticool knives being under utilized opening mail and the plastic wrap on snacks.

And that's how I often feel wen I'm carrying a larger knife.

It's nice when a knife gives you a decent amount to hold onto, but doesn't make or break a knife for me.

My Case half whittler offers peanut blades in a slightly larger frame and it's nice, but It wouldn't make a difference to me were it a smaller frame.

I think with the knife thing, just like the car thing, and the gun thing, theres a heck of a lot of ego involved in what we pick. "I can't use one of those little knives, my hand's too big." Or " I need a knife for hard use in my job." Or "I don't use any caliber gun that doesn't start with a 4."

No matter if its called image or smoke and mirrors, it all comes down to ego.

I hear these all the time and I am skeptical , but I also think a lot of people are just used to these knives the market has convinced the modern knife world they need.
If they were used to a smaller two handed knife they probably wouldn't think anything of the time it takes to grab a more appropriate tool.
I dont think most people encounter these situations often enough in the day for that time to add up and matter.

Theres definitely some ego around for sure, if your boots ain't rough and dirty, your truck is clean , and you carry a small little knife that hasn't been thrashed on your not manly enough or something.

I have one slip joint with a 3.5 in. blade and find it too big. Unless a larger knife has very strong back springs I start to get worried about my fingers, there’s just too much leverage...

Why ego? Is there no room for preference in your world?

A 3 3/4" or even 4" spring knife isn't all that big.

I hate posts that say "all you need is..." I can determine my own wants and needs thank you very much. There's already too much of that kind of thinking and attitude in this world.

I think he's simply pointing out that marketing has a lot of people demanding knives that are overkill for the package opening they do because that's what the market is focused on.

Nothing wrong with it, but it's hard not to notice.

3.25 was my go to for decades. Then I discovered that a little longer makes my knife carry better as it stands up in my pocket next to my wallet instead of laying in the bottom. So now it’s primarily 3 7/8 I find myself reaching for .

Perhaps, but I think it's the height of ego to presume to tell others what they need. How do you know? Besides, do you always buy only what is strictly necessary? Does anyone?
I am pretty much with you on your recent posts. I do like to show off my knives and I like it when I get approval/good feedback. I suppose that is ego. We all should have one, I think. Mine is a little weak on testosterone here in my '70s. I am as apt to show off with a 3 inch pre-war knife as anything bigger but I have a lot of much bigger knives that I dearly love. Why not? I get a giggle out of those giant compound grind tactical whackers that are so popular these days with the younger guys, but I am fine with that. Something for everyone. If I only bought what was necessary, my knife hoard would run to one dozen instead of 200 dozen, methinks. It's all good.

What people choose to carry vs what I can infer is likely most suitable for the average pocket knife tasks is none of my business and doesn't matter, I'm just observing that for a lot of people the market really seems have been more of a factor than practicality in what knife they choose to carry.

Although I may be deluding myself, I would like to think that the market is insignificant when it comes to the choices I make in life, from cars to knives to guns, and especially to politics (don't worry; I am not going there). I would further like to think that I have somewhat trained myself in critical thinking. My detractors may disagree. But I have spent a great deal of time studying how the marketers target me, and to say that I am an iconoclast and curmudgeon in that regard would be an understatement.

My knives run the gamut, but my sweet spot is the 3-1/2" (#32, barlow, 6207) to 3-7/8" (#47, muskrat)

Ego as in conceit. ;) I'm not sure he said "all you need" in this post anyway and I don't see anybody trying to determine your wants & needs here or anywhere else in discussions.

Ego? I gave up trying to impress anyone over 20 years ago. I have nothing to prove, and even if I thought I did, it wouldn't be with a knife. I carry what makes me feel good... which could be anything from a Buck 309 to a Buck 110.. or my Queen Mountain Man. I like variety. ;)

Honestly, most of us don't NEED anything more than a Fiat 500 to get our driving chores done, day to day, but where's the fun in that?

3-7/8" is borderline too big for me. 3-1/4" to 3-5/8" have become my favorites - FOLDERS.
Even 3-1/2" fixed blade is good but certainly if I'm carrying more than 3-3/4" I'd rather it be a fixed blade. My ego and ergos are happy with that. :)
