I think I may have a problem...

I've been buying (collecting?) knives for the past 35 years or so, I've owned perhaps just shy of 100 of them and most, up until the last 10 years or so were inexpensive knives. Then I found Benchmade and Spyderco. Cost went up but so did the quality and I was a happy camper. I even bought 2 Spyderco ParaMilitary with D2 and forest green G10 (I've never bought 2 of any knife, so I really liked this one). It was a limited edition and I liked it so much I wanted to be sure that 10-20 years from now I could have a new one again. :D

Fast forward to Christmas 2010 and I get my first CRK ever, a plain small 21 Sebenza. I like that so much that I knew I had to have a large so I got a large diamond plate 21 last week. Now, here is the problem. I recently went and handled my beloved Benchmades and Spydercos and they feel somehow ... diminished. :( They just don't measure up (I guess they shouldn't they cost 1/3 to 1/4 as much).

So, it seems that either I am done buying (can I really break a 35 year addiction ;)) or its gonna get real expensive here on in. :D:D

Am I the only one this has happened to??

The same thing happened to me. BUT now I am back to buying Spyderco's again. Why? Becaause I like the fact that Spyderco is constantly evolving by using the latest and greets materials. This makes it exciting for me. Now I know they are not the quality of CRK but it is less expensive to have so much fun.
I truly love Spyderco. The materials, the Spydie hole and the man behind the business. Some of the very reasons why I love CRK's.
I now have owned around 13 CRK's in the past 2 years and I would like a few more but not until I collect a few more Spyderco's. You may feel the same way after spending a few grand.
I can live without my Spyderco's or any other brand I have but NEVER will I live without my CRK's.

Thumper,

I kinda know what u mean although my story is a little different.Always used cheaper knives as a hunting implement,skinning,deboning deer and such but never was a collector of any particular model or brand.The Bucks,schrades,Gerbers were always good enough for me.To this day I've never owned a benchmade or Spyderco.

Fast forward to a month ago when I bought a few knives as Christmas presents and I find Bladeforums.I hear about Sebenzas and they spark a interest so I buy my first one a Classic large CGG,,,,end up seeing what all the fuss is about and feel the need for a small regular Seb for a companion to the large Classic.Now of course now the juices are Rollin and I'm slobbering all over the keyboard looking at ivory,snakewoos,maple Burl inlays with cool devin Thomas Damascus blades and cool looking unique graphic CGG polished titanium sides so I feel the need again and order a Seb with a spirograph Damascus blade ; ) (something to look forward to I figure).
So I figure my satisfaction is calmed for awhile,,,,,NOT!

I start getting a bug about wanting a Insingo,,, looks like a great edc tool with a great slicing blade,,,, hmmm feeling the urge but I'm holding off day after day.Checking them out doing research but not giving into the urge to make another Sebenza splash.Everything was fine until I see these cool looking tank built knives from a fellow buckeye here in Ohio and the ball starts rolling again,,picking up speed as I do research spend time here on Bladeforums.Then all of a sudden I see one on the classifieds and just had to inquire about it.It wasn't good when I got a email back from Rickster that it was available and he cut a lil better deal for me,,,,,believe me I tried my hardest not to buy this XM-18 but the disease kicked in and the purchase was made ; ).Thats 3 big dollar, in my book, knive purchases in less than a month and I'm thinking damn what the hell is wrong with me?????
So as u can see you are not alone my friend,,,,were in this thing together.Sadly I feel this is just the beginning but I have to slow down before the wife finds out or I'm going to be in the doghouse bigger than chit.I'm going to go now and get some much needed therapy by sitting on the couch and continually opening and closing my large classic sebenza feeling the oozing quality as I fondle her and glimpse with joy as her buttery smooth action opens n closes and I hear that bank vault "Click"as that beautiful perfectly shaped razor sharp blade sets into place!

Ahhhhhh ; )

I got the Umnumzaan a while ago. And that was enough for me in terms of the Reeves. Until recently, I just couldn't scratch that itch I needed to get a Sebenza. And it came today, too bad I wasn't home and I missed the mailman. Geuss I'll have to wait till tomorrow or Friday to pick it up from the post office.
But I think there will be a couple more in near future.
Definitely an Insingo, and something in Damascus, not sure what though, maybe a small or a large sebbie, or Mnandi

My tastes have also become more refined as I get older. There used to be a time (20 years ago) when I wouldn't spend more than $50 on a knife. Of course, what I would do is buy 10 of those $50 knives! Now I realize that I would rather have one special $400 knife that I carry and treasure than several $50 knives that I don't care much for.

Of course, now I have a dozen of those special knives (i.e. CRK's!), so it's all good! And yes, it's expensive. . . . But, like everything, it's relative. I have a handfull of Panerai watches that were $4000 each, so $400 for a knife seems reasonable (at least that's what I keep telling myself!).

Have you sold that Oris yet?

Derek,

It might be time to dabble in some Lange fun, every watch collector has their kick in Panerai but then it becomes time (no pun intended) to get serious:)

Yep -- sure did -- on one of the watch forums I frequent. I actually had four of them and sold them all. I love my Pannies, and the Oris models just didn't get worn much. Oris makes a nice watch, but it was like comparing a Griptilian to a Sebenza.

Nice piece, but not really my style. I prefer my watches and knives to be simple -- I believe less is more.

WUS I bet. I'm over there but under a different name.

Yep -- good guess -- WUS is my other hangout.

I've seen you there.
Keep an eye out for a G-Shock MTG910DJ-2V. They have been discontinued for awhile and it seems the newer ones are bringing a premium for that watch. I saw one barely used come up a little while ago for 1/2 the price of a new one, which tells me the prices of the new ones are just dumb. I mean it is only $200 but I am cheap. I mean I have to have money available for my CRK's and Omegas.

It's gonna get expensive.

I followed a similar progression, and just recently broke into the "custom" world.

I'm in the same realm. Why carry another inferior knife when I have my sebenza? I'll have to force myself to ocassionally. I'm also a watch guy, and after I bought my omega speedmaster, I had to struggle to force myself to wear my watches that were only a couple hundred dollars. Luckily, I'm a mechanic and really can't wear the speedmaster to work. Cheaper watches are also easier to appreciate as a work of art, whereas a cheaper knife is just a tool. After a couple months my psychotic obsession with that watch died down. Now I just have this deep appreciation for it. It's still the only watch I can wear when I'm not at work.

blah blah blah.....but I am cheap. I mean I have to have money available for my CRK's and Omegas.

This is funny on level you have not even touched my friend. I think I'm going to start a thread on how we Reeve addicts still shop the dollar menu at Wendy's and only buy socks when they are 50% off.

And to the OP, I've found there still can be quite a bit of fun in commodity knives. I still go for quality, but good manufactures still put out great products that I enjoy. I'm hooked on ESEE fixed blade knives even tho I've got a CR Neil Roberts that's been begging to go camping with me and the boys. My M4 Military has been my "blue jeans" knife for a month or so now.

But you are definitely right about this - after you've had a Sebenza or two, you can really spot the small imperfections in the knives you used to think were great.

Well everybody, thanks for confirming my problem :D:D

For now, I am very content with my 2 Sebenzas. Very glad that I finally (after looking at them for ~15 years) got one (or two :p).

Oh and by the way, I don't need another hobby (watches). I've got my TAG Heuer and I don't need anything else ... really I don't ... mustn't go there ... I'm all set ... one watch is fine ... really :D

... one watch is fine ... really. . . .

Sure! One, as in:

One diver's watch;
One pilot's watch;
One dress watch;
One fashion watch;
One military/stealth watch;
One digital multi-function watch;
One calendar watch;
One moon-phase watch;
One vintage watch;
One "el cheapo" watch (that you'll beat the hell out of);
One extra special watch (that you'll pass down to your kids).

You get the idea. . . .

That's good. If you get into watches you might eventually get stuck with this old ugly outdated thing. And who wants that? This thing tempted me for about 7 years. Know what I sold to get it? My miata. Gave up cars for my grail watch. Although after the a langhe and the JLC I'm kind of in the peewee leagues here. My friend has one of the the JLC atmos clocks and that thing is a true work of art. I could stare at it for hours.
