I think I may need to get back to an EO....

I've had an issue with this thumb nail for the last six or better months. It never seems to heal; it will get close then randomly tear lengthwise. I wonder if my Charlow is contributing to the issue? I think I may try to find an EO for a few weeks and see if I can't get my nail to heal. I'm not sure why this would happen exactly.

So, any suggestions on EOs?

I gave this one away to a new member. I miss it, I may try to find another like it. Just about the perfect little knife.

Alternatively, has anyone modded a tcb into an EO? I am hesitant to try it with my current tool set. If I had a small wheel attachment for my grinder, I might give it a go, but I'm not trying by hand.

Open to suggestions. As always, everyone loves a good knife picture, so those are appreciated too. Lol

p.s. Sorry to hear about your nail, that really stinks. Hopefully it will heal with some rest.

I have a nice GEC 12 toothpick with an acceptable pull, though a bit on the heavy side. However, their machining of the nail nick is so precise that it actually tears the thumbnail when I open it. I have other non-GEC knives with similar pulls that don't have the same problem. If you can smooth off the top edge of the nail nick that may help. This is one of those situations where "fit and finish" can be too good. I never have a problem with the tumble-polished Case knives.

My nails are getting brittle too and I just trimmed both my split thumbnails so I will be packing something very easy to open tomorrow. Generally, knives without half stops are easier on my nails because if I'm not paying attention, that half stops damages my thumbnail...the abrupt stop tears it a bit.

There have been a few photos posted of boys knives with EO notches added. Now with the barlow not having a bottom bolster, it shouldn't be a problem for most of the knife modders around here.

I've found that the nail nick spear point barlows are much friendlier to my nails than the long pulls. Now while I greatly prefer the aesthetics of the long pull, that nail nick sure is functional on the two blade barlows.

Now on my single blade, spear point, long pull barlow I am actually able to pinch the blade open.

Which charlow do you have that is doing that? The ones I have are fairly light on the pull scale at about 5 max. There are still a few of the eo boys knives out there or maybe you could talk somebody like glennbad into modding one of your current knives. :) An eo charlow would be pretty sweet!

Don't they sell something at the drug store called "Tuff-Nail????? Not being wacky here - I'm serious. I swear I have seen it before. Google "Fingernails and Diet" and see what comes up. Carry a small piece of metal with you and use it as a blade opener until your nails heal.

Yeah, my ex used to use it. My RA figures into the mix as well. Fortunately, I haven't run into a SAK I couldn't open easily which great for me! :D

Sorry about your thumb nail there. I had a 73 Tidioute scout (?) that was really tough to open when they first came out. I took a Dremel with a small drum sander and added a EO to it. I don't have pics and the knife is long gone to its new owner. Matt

I have a couple of real nail breakers too - they live in the drawer. Have you gotten one of the blade picks (steel thumbnails?) - that is the only way I can open a few of mine without busting my thumbnail. OH

Interesting...a traditional knife can be a nutritional deficiency diagnostic tool and subsequent research impetus;)

I'm not one hundred percent sure it's my knife. I'm left handed, so it stays in my left pocket, and most of the time I open it by wrapping my middle finger around and pulling down, so it's my middle finger nail that should be messed up.

I'll have to get in my drawer and see if I have something I can pinch open for a couple weeks. Lots of good ideas here

I have weak nails and RA too which make it hard to deal with knives that aren't EO or have pinchable blades. My nail will split and takes forever to heal. I carry either a SAK, an EO, or a pinchable knife now and my thumbnail has finally gotten back to normal.

If you search around, there are several great EO models out there, or several of our forum modders can convert one for you. I've a couple that were modded coming in that I'll post pics of. Should be here maybe today.

2011 BF forum knife, and a Schatt & Morgan 99.

eat ya greens broccoli and the like. for healthy hair and nails.also as a medic you would be aware of keeping it moist to promote healing(i only say that because my wife is a highly professional nurse and takes every opportunity to remind me of this. yknow i thought let it dry out and toughen up for like ever but apparently not. .

super glue was invented for wound care -or is that urban myth?

I've heard people claim to use it for such, but I hadn't heard it was originally made for such.

Hey evens, I've got this little opener that I don't use anymore, and it's in like new shape. Give me a shout on the email with your address and I'll get it off to ya. It's yours if you want it.

Carl.
