I think I screwed up…

Ok the other night I was enjoying some (ok a lot) Jonny Walker Black and decided to tighten the pivot screw on my SOG flash I.

Being not a little bit drunk I over tightened it, and striped the pivot.

So now I got a assisted opening knife that wont open without great effort.

Short of sending it off, or buying a new knife is there anything I can do?

will the pivot not back off? it sound like the pin is spinning in the scales.

The pivot is now to tight for the AO to work and in my drunken enthusiasm to tighten the knife what was once a nice hex screw now looks like more like a circle.

If you can find just the right size square taper screw extractor you might be able to grab onto it. Don't worry about hammering on it as long as the pivot nut on the other side is well supported. Otherwise, it's going to need to be drilled.

Edit: Almost forgot, before you go at that screw with an extractor, wrap some electrical tape around the knife so the blade doesn't swing open.

I tried that already, I didn’t have any thing at hand but a small flat head screw driver. It didn’t work and I think I made the existing problem even worse.

Every time I get drunk and play with knives, I wake up next day with a bunch of cuts on my hands and arms.:grumpy:

I would suggest using a screw extractor if you have one, and if not then use a sharp drill bit slightly larger than the circle. Don't drill with it, but rather hold it in your hand and apply firm pressure whilst trying to unscrew the pin. Not sure how badly tightened it is, but this trick worked on a stripped out screw on the body of my blue ZDP Delica. Worked great!

Man, that's terrible. However, I think I got something that'll trump you. Whenever I drink a little too much, it seems as though, in my drunken wisdom, I find it's a good idea to sharpen my knives.

The next morning, a good number of them end up dull and the edge geometry is ruined. I've gotta remember to put them away before I bring out the Scotch. Laphroaig is an unforgiving mistress.

Whenever I drink a little too much I find myself online buying a new knife (usually one I've been thinking about for a while but just couldn't bring myself to spend the money). I guess the inhibitions of "my wife's going to kill me for buying another knife" get drowned away.

 I think there's only one thing slightly more dangerous than hearing a guy holler "Y'all hold my beer, and watch THIS !" and that's "Y'all hold my whiskey and watch me play with my knives!"

Hope you get your knife sorted fella.

Also, if you try to extract it yourself there may be Loctite on the threads that will need to be heated in order to loosen somewhat easily. Not sure but it's common.

Probably not, since he was able to overtightent without heating it.

I've learned that when I am too drunk to drive I should also not attempt to fix or perform routine maintenance on anything I care about.

I cant even say that it was “routine maintenance” the tension on the pivot was just fine the way it was.

The best that I can say was that at least I didn’t try to “fix” any of my more expensive knives…

This might sound very stupid but looking at the pivot I’m not sure if using an extractor screw is going to work.

So I was wondering if any of you know of any adhesives that;. if I where to bond a nail or something like that to the pivot would adhere strongly enough for me to be able to turn the pivot. And then allow me to remove the nail or whatever I use and remove the adhesive from the pivot. Either my prying the “gunk” off or sanding it down.

I really don’t know if what I’m looking for exists.

I doubt you can find something like that, the surface area of the screw is too small for any type of glue or even epoxy to withstand the torque of extracting twist/turn, it will break off.
Why do you think the screw extractor would not work?
If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, you should send it to SOG, so the fix it for you. Besides you are going to need a new screw anyway.
