I think I want a Toothpick!

I'm gonna throw a little something in here. I don't know why, but the long slinder blade that Case uses, along with their slab sidded feel has turned me off the toothpick pattern. However, yesterday I was knife shopping and picked up a GEC in burnt stag and was awe struck! I fell in love with it. It has a heftie clip blade and a rounder profile in my hand and this is what the tooth pick should look and feel like to me.

Does anyone else feel this way about this pattern?

To me it just isn't a toothpick without that long, slender blade. I really like the way that new Schatt & Morgan feels, it isn't quite as slab-sided as the big Case. I think "Powderhorn" is a better description of GEC's offering than "Toothpick", but I know others here prefer the stouter build of the GEC.

There have been so many comments on this forum about how good the GEC #12 pattern feels in the hand, that it can be taken as almost universal. It is, however, less "toothpicky" as a result. I have 4 already, and am constantly looking at other handle materials. It's just a very good pattern.

The Case TrapperLock has a thinner blade somewhat similar to the toothpicks you like, but it also locks. When I was looking into traditional knives at first, these really appealed to me, but I have since stopped caring about such things in my traditional knives.

I made the drive out to the nearest Bass Pro Shop, hoping they would have a decent selection of traditional knives. In fact, they did have a decent selection, just not the ones I was looking for (large toothpicks!)

I did, however, find the TrapperLock mentioned above. I really liked the feel, the look, and the blade. It is nice and thin (having only one blade), and the action is silky smooth. The bolsters, liners, and blade are polished nice and shiny, and the old style look of the Yellow Boy scales just pushed it over the edge for me (I know the "Yellow Boy" is the cheaper handle material, but I really like it and don't have a knife with that look).

So, I picked it up and brought her home.

I am still after a large Toothpick, but I really want to feel one before I order one (especially with all the talk about how the thinner v. thicker ones feel in the hand).

I know exactly what you mean. I have both, and the GEC just has a great feel to it. It's an under-appreciated pattern, IMHO. In fact, I just got a new one in today: Antique orange bone with a saber-ground blade. (2nd from left in Dennis' picture.)
