I think I'm done with folders ...

well, other than SAKs and the like ;) I took my Barkie TUSK to my office job, instead of a folder. Its so light in its Kydex sheath it was as noticeable as a 3-layer SAK. I didn't really have anything to cut, so I used it to open some boxes that I knew would have to be opened sometime soon, and man it was like butter. I have it hair-splitting sharp and though it's .17 inch thick, the convex edge is ground thin enough to make it an excellent slicer.

The real kicker for me was when I realized how easily I could push the kydex sheath off with my thumb. Now its truly a one-hand knife :D

So my days of carrying "broken" knives are over

I find when I have a sub-5" fixed blade on my belt, my EDC folder rarely leaves my pocket. I'm seriously considering having a pocket sheath made for my new Fiddleback Bushcrafter Jr. when it comes, if I deem it to be small enough to work in that regard. If not, I guess I'll have an excuse to buy another. :D

I didn't get the TUSK with the idea in mind of pocket carry, from the specs it seemed a little big, but when it arrived I was playing around with it when I got a phone call. I tucked the knife in its sheath in my pocket and yakked on the phone. After the call, I was looking everywhere wondering where I had set the knife down :D

I definitely have my eye on a Fiddleback Bushcrafter Jr.

Fortunately I never really started with folders. Yeah, I have the obligatory SAK and an opinel #7. I actually carried the opinel a lot and like that blade (the wood sucks me in everytime). But a fixed blade is just one. The little 3.25" think Breeden kat knife with Normark sheath is what stays in my front pocket. It fits there perfectly. If it were .5" longer it would stick out, but as it is, totally concealed. I use the thing all the time in the office, from cutting tape to boxes. People just have gotten used to me whipping it out for EDC duty. Fortunately I look like a harmless dad so I never get a sheeple reaction.

Fixed blades just work. Pull it out of the sheath and begin - no more instructions needed. I think if you are one of those mechanical guys who like to figure out where to press to depress the lock - then a folder good for you.

LOL, the people in my office know about my "hobby" too ;):D

Hum. So I'm just now getting into liking folders! My year or two long fixed blade kick has subsided as I've found and purchased a wide base of fixed blades to last me for a while, whereas I've never had any good quality folders. I've started with some Grips, and I'm moving along into some other popular choices (like a Ritter Grip and a SERE) and some not so popular as far as wilderness/survival goes (Lone Wolf D2).

I still prefer a fixed blade as a survival options, but I'm enjoying folders in the wilderness for general tasks and bushcraftery.

Maybe heavily depends on purpose and condition.
I prefer fixed because there is no limitation in their design
to implement folding mechanism, just my opinion.

I'm into to folders because I have to me. I can not, to the best of my knowledge, legally carry a FB in my state. This forces me to seek out a folder with a sub 3" blade.

I'd like nothing more than to carry my Graham Spearpoint in my pocket as an EDC knife but I'm a law abiding citizen......:( My FBs are limited to use in my yard and when in the woods. It's sad, but I'm happy that I get to use them at least sometimes.

I wish I worked in an office like you. I pulled out my Case Canoe one day for something and someone asked my why needed a "big buck knife" in my pocket...

now that i have my BRKT mikro canadian, even moreso than before, i really have no good reason to carry a folding knife.

but i enjoy having several blades in the same knife, and i like the classic look and feel of a slipjoint.

i have never had too many high quality folders, just a few. i've never had any tactical styled high quality folders.

i think that its entirely possible to avoid folding knives entirely...marty simon pretty much hates anything that comes pre-broken. his EDC is his fox river i think.

in the woods i almost never touch my folding knife, but its nice to have that really fine point sometimes (splinters, very fine cutting, etc)

BRKT also makes a line of knives specifically designed for EDC that are a bit lighter and work even better.

They even made a mini-TUSK a year or so ago that was fantastic.

In addition to the really small (mikro-canadian type) knives, the Mini-Northstar or the new Ultra-Lite Bushcraft are great knives for that purpose.

when I carry a knife its 100% a fixed blade. I have folders stashed in packs. I never realised how much easier a fixed blade is to EDC than a pocket, dig in my leg through my pocket folder.

A clipped to my pocket folder is a different story. I am stuck on spiderco's for ease of flipping open.

But its been 3 years since I carried a folder at all.

I has been 18 months since I used a folder. And all the fixed blades I have used have been EDC able. When I am in the woods I am often with scouts and adult leaders of the trip have asked me to not use fixed blades on trips. Around the house it is wonderful to something small like my Krein Woodcarver as of late.

I have a TUSK. Where did you get the kydex for it?

That's a good question. I bought it from a forum member here and it came with it. It's a very decent sheath, I'll email him and ask where he got it from.
