HTing my damascus EDC today and just wanted to share how this blade came out of the quench. This is with a gas forge for HT mind you. The pyrometer read at about 1575F when I pulled out to quench. I used a piece of pipe inside my forge with a firebrick holder for the blade inside of it along with some hunks of wood to eat up oxygen. This is exactly as the blade came out of the quench. All I did to it was wipe it off with a rag and check the edge for hardness with a file.

I hope to get this one finished today....we'll see :)

On the third round of tempering now. Probably won't get done tonight since I have to be up so early tomorrow I almost want to call it late. I've got some Macassar Ebony scales rough ground and flattened (just got a new 2x2' piece of granite from a friend who does countertops...man did THAT help getting stuff flat). I still have to grind the bevels and then handle it, but overall I'm happy with the progress thus far.

More pictures as I take 'em.

I'll still need kiln time for long blades, don't worry. I think this is only really good for blades to about 7-8". I figured I had to figure out the best way to work with what I've got now. I was only used to HTing in a coal fire.

No worries, it was a mostly puttering around day. No forging today, but I do have a workrest for the grinder now. Methinks I'm really going to like it. Grinding COMPLETELY freehand can get a little frustrating. I'll get to test it out when I grind the bevels into this piece. In the meantime, I've got flat sanding to do on this blade tonight...

Here's an update on this one. I visited J. and tess Neilson yesterday (thanks again...you guys rock!) and got some grinding tips from J. Today it got some clean up, and tonight I etched it. Here it is after etching. Simply putting this thing on a scanner does not to the damascus justice. After a light buffing the 15n20 really pops more than the scanner will show. The scales and pins are a secret and will go on tomorrow :)

Looking good, deker!! Having fun, are we??? ;)

You know it! This one is from my first pattern welded billet ever, so it's particularly special to me. After this one is done I'm getting back to pattern welding to try and finish up a billet I'm working on now.
