I think it's time to buy a Becker

I don't know man, I've been reading the Becker forum all week, and suddenly I need to buy a Becker. Weird right? I want some new fixed blades and they're really cutting the mustard for me.

I'm kinda torn now though, originally I was into the 16. But then the 7, 10, and 5 came calling. I'm just using it as a woods bumming knife.

The 16 and 10 are cool, because they're shorter and lighter. But, I cut my teeth on a kabar and still dig mid sizzle bowies. The 7 would be pretty good balance. I just like the looks of the 5. Reminds me of a "scalp knife". Great kitchen knife, and would probably be a great fighter. I've never used a trailing point before though so I don't know if I'd like it. Seeing as you guys all peer pressured me into Beckers, what's a good starter Becker?

Depends really. I do a lot of wood processing, so for me, the 9 is it. The 4 as well. I can't really comment on the 16, as the handles were too small for me. The 5 is definitely a good knife. I liked it, but sold it, as I prefer the 9. I've had a few 10's, and really liked them, but I had a few 2's, and preferred them more. That said, I know I'll end up with another one, haha. They're all addicting. Once you decide, you'll end up with all the others as well. ;)

"It's time to buy a Becker", I agree...I haven't bought one in weeks!:D

If I only had one it would be tough to choose between the BK14 and BK16. Like both a lot. I EDC the 14.
I'll go ahead and say you should get the 16. I really prefer a drop point over a clip or trailing point.

Look at the new thread in the Becker forum about "least used knives". Seems a lot of guys find the 7 to be an awkward "jack of all...master on none" kind-of blade and I agree. If you want a big knife then get a big knife (BK9, BK21,etc.) and also have a smaller knife with you for tasks like skinning game and food prep and other such tasks that large 7"+ blades aren't good for.

That's probably a good point about the 7. 16 would be a great size to just throw on a belt, and not really get in the way of things. I'm not really into knives larger than a 7. Too inconvenient on a belt, and I don't really do any chopping. I think the main thing I still like about the 7 or 5 is the fact that they're both good fighters. Still in that military mentality I guess.

Here is my advice, given what you have said. Start of with a 17. Then, get a 5. And if that doesn't do it, then get a 7. It isn't going anywhere. BK5s are all over the place. And the 17 can still be had and meets that smaller bowie styled shape. Or get a 16, but from what you have said, I am betting a 17 would be just the thing for you.

You'll love the trailing point design. It gets a lot done. I like the looks of the 17, but if you can track down a 15, you'll be very pleased.

15, 16, 17 are great woods blades that carry well on the belt. Their stock sheaths are also much better IMHO than the one the 7 comes with.

Yeah, you guys are right. Obviously I should buy a 5 and a 16, then strip them and patina them. Then a nice kydex sheath for the 16, so it can easily be belt carried. And micarta/g10 scales. The 5 could use wood and leather while I'm at it. And after my bank account recoups, a 7 or 10 must be acquired. And I'll also have to get a 24 and cerakote it purple for my wife, to distract her from how many beckers ive been buying. Whew, thank god you guys were here to set me straight on this one!

DerekH, I actually do like the 17, but I want a flat grind for a smaller knife. If I dislike the drop point that much, I'll just file it into a clip point.

Great choices!!

I will say as an avid kydex maker and user who's made sheaths and holsters for just about all of the things a might carry, I've not found the need to make one for my 16. The only mod I did was I put a "stitch" of paracord through the belt loop (melted holes with a hot nail) so it sits about 5/8" higher on my belt.

I like the pink BK24 idea. I didn't even think about buying my wife a knife so she won't feel left out!
I did buy her a nice skil saw once....

I've never seen a nylon/cordura sheath I liked. I also prefer a higher riding sheath. I'm now actively pursuing a good deal on a 24, that way my wife's too occupied to sabotage my Becker spree.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If you want a lighter carry knife the tweeners might be your thing. If you want a jack of all trades 5" or about a BK 10 looks about right. For not know what you might need it for a BK 2 would be the best choice, no thumb ramp to get in the way of woody working. For general purpose not know what you need it for the BK 7 covers about all bets. For light weight woods wandering the 16 looks like it might be best. I like spear points/drop points for general purpose myself, but can get along with clip points and others.

Note I only have a BK 2 and find it does lots of tasks and jobs for a 5" blade and I don't mind the weight.

I started with 2 than a 7. I liked them so much it made me want to check out all of them I could and weed out the ones I don't like :D Have enough now and I still can't pick a favorite. I Have not got rid of any and like everyone of them  I guess what I'am trying to say is pick out the one you like I doubt you will be disappointed. They are all Awesome. I use the 24 the most

I'd recommend you get a 14 or 11. I'm guessing you spend more time in urban area's than rural ones and either of those two can really go anywhere. I'm playing the odds is all. That having been said, you're gonna need one of each Becker.
I've mapped out a purchase plan for you.
1) BK14 (BK24)
2) BK16 (or BK17 if you can find one)
3) BK9
4) BK10
5) Bk11
6) BK15 (if you can find one)
7) BK2
8) BK29
That should get you to New Years.

The 16 is light enough, that it is hard to notice it on your side while being active. I'd say get a 16 or a 17 if you find one.
