I think it's time to slow down...

It's been two weeks since I got sucked into the slip joint vortex and I'm now up to five knives. I already had the 110 when I began this journey but the other four followed me home in the last two weeks. The Toothpick just arrived today.

I think it's time to slow down.

You know, in addition to these I also own quite a few decent modern folders (e.g. BM710, PM2, WH E10, etc) but the knife that always seems to be in my pocket lately is the Peanut. I'm getting very attached to that little knife. I've got one or two other patterns to add to the collection and then I'm thinking I'll focus on Peanuts for a while.

I knew you guys were going to be bad for me.

Nice collection sir. Take a breather and use em a bit then analyze and see what to let go of if any and grab a few more!

Agreed on the slowing down part, I think that is good advice you are giving yourself. If I could send myself a message back in time, it would be to stop after I bought my first three, carry each one of them for a solid month as my only carry, and then evaluate my preferences and choices at that time, then buy no more than one per month, carry that one, before adding any more to the pile. At the very least, I would only buy 12 knives a year, and would learn what I liked and didn't like as I went along.

There is ALWAYS something new coming out, and if you miss it the first time around, you can usually pick up a well-maintained knife from one of our members through the Exchange forum, when they come up again.

Some real beauties there, Im partial to the stags.
Im having a similar problem, I tried to slow down by shopping for used, less expensive stuff at auction, but today I bought one, and on a lark found a Charlow on the exchange and bought that too.
Were going to have to start selling one to buy another soon :-)

That was a good snag on that TC Barlow, Jon. ;) I appreciate you saving me from that temptation.

I appreciate you saving me from that temptation.

email me anytime, youre welcome to it. I tried to resist hoping someone would save me from myself, but ... heeeeelp, everything is spinning, the vortex suuuucks, aaaaaaa :-)

I was tempted as well as a Barlow is high on my list. The only reason I didn't jump on it was... I need to slow down.

We all have our kryptonite when we are on self-imposed knife diets, such as the one I am trying to stick to. That TC Barlow with clip main and the red sawcut handles is keyed to my DNA somehow. It's like I have neuro-receptors that are shaped just like that knife.

Luckily (?), my wife's car needed major transmission repair this week shortly after I finally relented and let her buy some new furniture (after 20 years) so I'm pretty well skint right now. I may be able to afford a new knife in 2016. :(

If by "bad for me," you mean "bad for my bank account," then do what I've been doing: Sell some of the modern pieces in your collection to fund more traditionals. My new motto is becoming, "Out with the new, and in with the old!" Something about 'em just kinda grabs ya'!

Congrats on your first five - very nice start.....

I feel like I need to as well. With the way shipping is out here, I think it'll be enough if a deterrent. I am allowing myself to get one more since I am hoping to grab some stones and stuff anyway.

I have carried a CV peanut to work everyday since I got it about 18 months ago. I bought a second incase I lose it too. These little knives will accomplish much more than you could imagine.

Lol I love it! You have an e10 and carry the peanut instead. I think a lot of people do the same. I just picked up a ti framelock. Not as nice as an e10 by a long shot.

But I don't care. I like playing with the thing. Had it for two days now. I stropped it, but havnt cut a thing with it. In the morning I put a colt branded peanut in my pocket and there's never any doubt that its what I will edc for the day.

I go in buying spurts and then slow down for a few months. I need time to appreciate what I have purchased, handle them, and use the ones that I feel inclined to use.

I had the same revelation about a year or so ago concerning moderns and traditionals.

Nice collection.

IMHO Knives can be a consumable  or a durable good , taking a breathe in this marathon for some is a strategy. Knife buying and carrying is a lifetime sport of enjoyment, while the sprinter doesn't take the time to stop and admire the rosewood handled slip joints or what they have in their own stable.

Quattromoni said something along the lines of he had the money to go on these great trips, because he didn't spend his money on knives as much as some. While that quote has stuck with me, my spending was akin to that of a sailor on shore leave heading to the public houses. Well, that has caught up with me. The trouble is, I have a lot of knives I want to keep, but a lot of knives I want to buy. Some have to go, I have been setting aside $, recently that which I do not have, for these purchases. I have several people, buddies included, that want to fork over $$$ for stuff I have, but I don't want to part with it.

My biggest thrill about knives right now, is learning as much as I can about them. Books, Knife World, talking to knife nuts and writers. Learning little tidbits about the industry. I've been carrying a core group of knives. Usually my Remington peanut which was a gift from Carl and is gummint legal for my office, a small jack knife or Charlow, and a larger trapper or jack knife. Why so man? I'm goofy, that's my only answer, I could lie and say it's because of the whole three is two, two is one, and one is none.

My EDC pool is good enough for me right now. The peanut above, my single blade spear Charlow or single blade spear 15 boys knife, my Case Tribal Spear or single blade 73, or sometimes my single blade 48. I get by great with just the jack, but I like to carry the Tribal Spear. It is a sickness, most people would get by fine for the rest of their lives with just one of these.

But where would the fun be in that?

I'd like to add a Case Stockman soon just because I consider it an "essential" for any collection. And I also want a Barlow, either a TC or Northwoods Madison. I'll wait a bit on the Barlow in order to avoid divorce (unless someone puts an "offer I can't refuse" in the Exchange :D ).

In the meantime I'm thinking I'll start adding more Peanuts as I can. I love the knife, need a go-forward collecting strategy, and they would be fun to collect.

EDIT: Oh... and I "need" a Sodbuster.

And a Congress. And a #78 American Jack. And...

Oh, heck.
