I think it's time to slow down...

Good news for you is that Case Stockman and Peanut patterns aren't going away. If you wait 6 months, you'll still be able to get a Case Stockman or Peanut. And they are not especially expensive. If you shop cleverly you can usually get those particular ones in the $25 to $35 range, depending on your preferences for CV or stainless steel and handle material.

I've slowed down on my knife purchases. I have a lot of nice knives that I don't carry often. Now when I find myself getting the new knife itch, I just look through what I already have. Invariably I find something that scratches the itch.

This doesn't mean I won't purchase another knife. I've got one in the queue with Craig Brewer, and I don't think I can live without the Case/Bose 2014 collaboration (Wharncliffe lock back whittler) :D.

I'm also at the point where I'm thinking of selling off some of the stuff I have no real attachment to, and never carry. I think Carl's (jackknife) minimalizing theory might have something to do with that.

What is that theory do you have a link?
Maybe theory is the wrong word. It's basically jackknife's thoughts on getting older and not needing so much stuff, knives included. I can't put my finger on the thread, or maybe it was in the lounge. I think we all probably start thinking about that stuff, when we realize we aren't young anymore. :)

I tend to fade in and out of the Accumulation stage of knife enthusiasm. It's more of a winter hobby, and sometimes there are periods where nothing catches my eye. Or I'm being tight with money. Or sometimes I focus on other aspects of the hobby, like knife photography, or starting new forum posts to show something interesting or to learn more.

No worries, the knives I have aren't going anywhere, and there will always be more for sale in the future. :)

When I see a nice minty Schrade etc. pop up for around 20-25 bucks....I try to get it if I can afford it but there are only a couple of knives that I want bad enough to pay more for.

I'd like to add a Case Stockman soon just because I consider it an "essential" for any collection. And I also want a Barlow, either a TC or Northwoods Madison. I'll wait a bit on the Barlow in order to avoid divorce (unless someone puts an "offer I can't refuse" in the Exchange :D ).

In the meantime I'm thinking I'll start adding more Peanuts as I can. I love the knife, need a go-forward collecting strategy, and they would be fun to collect.

EDIT: Oh... and I "need" a Sodbuster.

And a Congress. And a #78 American Jack. And...

Oh, heck.

:D

Falling off the slip joint wagon now and then, is OK too. :D

Crap. Apparently I'm not young anymore. 😄

I don't need MANY knives... Just a couple more....

You've got enough there to keep even a well versed knife nut entertained. Don't burn out. Take your time. Also I know I'm sounding like a hoarder here, but I don't subscribe to the idea of selling knives from your collection to finance purchases. More often than not, I find myself wishing I had something back I sold, also I "rediscover" knives from time to time, and enjoy them more.

That's about the way I "slow down" it seems at times. I talk the talk and then out of no where (at least to me) comes the Northwoods Madison and I buy two of them including an ivory. I have a TC Barlow on the way to me. See how I slowed down since Christmas when I picked up maybe 5 knives in about a month including a Bob Dozier custom.....

So far I haven't sold any knives but the time is probably coming soon. I have quite a few low-end Spydercos that aren't doing me any good sitting in a box.

I talk a good game about slowing down and then tonight place a bid on a Peanut. Yeah, it's a sickness. But, hey! Look at all the money I'm saving now that I've lost interest in that Sebenza!

Maybe I'll get lucky and lose.

Quattromori said something...

Dan,
I'm surprised to see your remember those words :)
Personally, there are many different ways to approach a hobby or passion. All of them include spending some money on something totally innecessary, just because we like it. There is no shame in that. Sometimes I quiver when I read "I need a knife" here on BF...I guess "need" has nothing to do with it in the vast majority of cases. We're all aware that, basically, each one of us has more knives than he would be able to wear out in a lifetime.
As for wanting more...well, that's another story. I was taught never to do the maths on someone else's wallet, or priorities.
Some of us enjoy buying many knives, or collecting them, some like trying them, some like owning few knives chosen with extreme care, some just hoard as many as they can, some prefer to have less knives and carry/use them more frequently, and so on. There is no right or wrong, nor no one here can tell you if you should slow down.
There's just you, your passion, and the path that makes you happier.
And no, it's not a sickness, not unless you don't have money to pay your bills, cause you've spent it on knives.
It's a hobby. A passion. Our passion. But don't blame us for that :p

They're certainly true for me, but everyone is different, and finds happiness in different places :)

Aw heck, I won the bid. A buffalo horn Peanut. My Peanut "collection" just doubled. :D

I totally agree with Fausto. We're all in this game for different reasons and everyone has their own needs, priorities, and limitations. This is why I get irked when I hear someone ask the question, "why would someone spend $XXX on a knife". To me the question is a non sequitur. Everyone has their reasons for what they do. Your reasons and mine may not always agree but we still enjoy a common interest.
