I hear a couple comments pretty often- all are basically on this pattern:
victorinox should stop ever making on any of their knives:
the package carrying hook
the corkscrew
the bottle opener
the small blade
Now, aside from some innate negative reaction I have to people wnating me to not BE ABLE to get things I like and use, there are certain aspects to this that people don't always consider fully.
For example, part of the aim of an SAK is to be able to handle things that come up. That package carrier may be the silliest thing in the world (especially in the USA where people mostly drive anywhere more than 2 blocks away). First time I used it was when we lived on our sailboat. there was a special at a grocery store on wine, the sort of thing you can't really pass up when you are gonna go out for a few weeks of cruising and such. End result, our packs were already filled with groceries, so 2 string handles bags with 4 bottles of wine each. That will cut the circulation right off your poor fingers after a few blocks. the package carrier actually came in handy! Now, I consider it one of those rare essentials. I've also used it to hold tension on springs and lines when working with attachments, and for tracing wiring in a server room.
That poor corkscrew- Again, it's an SAK, you are supposed to be prepared for stuff. These days it's pretty rare to find anything other than wine and some beers corked (some of the trappist beers are corked and then capped). But when you need it, you need it! And hey, I'm 90% sure that you can't have a model with a straight pin without a corkscrew.
the bottle opener- and the combo tool- Funny thing is that I use a bottle opener daily. Of course, I also homebrew, including the kids' soda. Sure, there are 4893752 ways to open a bottle, but bottle openers actually work. It's also a flathead screwdriver and wire stripper- both of which I use often enough. I haven't used that combination tool that does both bottle and can opening enough to really have a pass/fail judgement on it. It works on regular commercial cans but I could easily see it failing on heavier cans.
No comment on the small blade. I have my issues with it sometimes, but I've also used it plenty!
