I Think I've Found My Favorite SAK

As the title of the thread states, I think I've found my ideal Victorinox---of course, that's a statement that I've been making for quite some time about almost every new one I get. :D

The Victorinox Pioneer Harvester is a fantastic knife. It features the Alox handles and other tools of the standard Farmer---a staple in my everyday kit---but also has the awesome small hawkbill blade of the Pioneer Pruner. It has every blade shape and tool that I look for it a multi-purpose knife; no doubt it will become a major player in my collection of outdoor tools.

I've been wanting to try one of those out since I bought my Electrician. I love the small accessory blade on these knives. Is yours one with the saw as well?

It should have a can opener instead of the bottle opener.
They should get rid of the bottle opener on their knives.
I can't remember the last time encountered a bottle that I needed a bottle opener.

Is there anyway to attach it to a keychain?

Large blade, small hawkbill, saw, bottle opener/wire stripper and awl.

Now if they would only add one of those mystery hooks.....

I guess that's why I often carry 2 SAKs:D

That is what I've carried daily for over 6 months! I'd like to see them offer alox models that swap the awl for a small blade..as much as I like it it would be a good option!

That sounds like a great blade combo.
I will have to pick up a Vic Pioneer Harvester before too long.

I agree on ditching the bottleopener!
I actually use the canopener quite a bit!
Lack of canopener is the only reason i haven't bought a Harvester.

Or they could replace the bottleopener with the combo tool (canopener/bottleopener) found on the Vic Compact and Vic Waiter.

I am particularly fond of that model, but wish that it had a lanyard ring like the farmer does! However, I cannot agree with removing the bottle opener. It works great as a lightweight prybar and I often use it for helping to wedge open split rings. Works like a charm.

You don't drink good beer?

Of course I do - but I don't need a bottle opener for that - I use my hand.
If in a bar; the bartender opens it.
If at home the girlfriend opens it with a bottle opener.

The bottle opener should be ditched. A can opener is more useful

I hear a couple comments pretty often- all are basically on this pattern:

victorinox should stop ever making on any of their knives:

the package carrying hook
the corkscrew
the bottle opener
the small blade

Now, aside from some innate negative reaction I have to people wnating me to not BE ABLE to get things I like and use, there are certain aspects to this that people don't always consider fully.

For example, part of the aim of an SAK is to be able to handle things that come up. That package carrier may be the silliest thing in the world (especially in the USA where people mostly drive anywhere more than 2 blocks away). First time I used it was when we lived on our sailboat. there was a special at a grocery store on wine, the sort of thing you can't really pass up when you are gonna go out for a few weeks of cruising and such. End result, our packs were already filled with groceries, so 2 string handles bags with 4 bottles of wine each. That will cut the circulation right off your poor fingers after a few blocks. the package carrier actually came in handy! Now, I consider it one of those rare essentials. I've also used it to hold tension on springs and lines when working with attachments, and for tracing wiring in a server room.

That poor corkscrew- Again, it's an SAK, you are supposed to be prepared for stuff. These days it's pretty rare to find anything other than wine and some beers corked (some of the trappist beers are corked and then capped). But when you need it, you need it! And hey, I'm 90% sure that you can't have a model with a straight pin without a corkscrew.

the bottle opener- and the combo tool- Funny thing is that I use a bottle opener daily. Of course, I also homebrew, including the kids' soda. Sure, there are 4893752 ways to open a bottle, but bottle openers actually work. It's also a flathead screwdriver and wire stripper- both of which I use often enough. I haven't used that combination tool that does both bottle and can opening enough to really have a pass/fail judgement on it. It works on regular commercial cans but I could easily see it failing on heavier cans.

No comment on the small blade. I have my issues with it sometimes, but I've also used it plenty!

The absence of a can opener isn't a really big deal for me---I carry a P38 in one of the pockets in my T.H.E. wallet and usually one tucked away in my watch pocket or something.

koyote I don't think anyone here is saying they should stop offering specific tool options.
There are lots of models and lots of choices for those who want to avoid specific tools.
We are just suggesting ideas for mods or as potential new models for Victorinox!
lol!

Personally I really like the combo tool (canopener/bottleopener) found on the waiter and compact.
It does a good job at bottle opening and can-opening.
It has most of the utility of both tools in one package.
And if it was offered on an Alox model like the Farmer that would be one more space for another tool, preferably another small blade like the one on the harvester or even a regular SAK small blade.
Seems to me that more utility in a small 2-3 layer size would be a good thing!
:)

I'd love to see Victorinox expand their Alox line, maybe an Alox with saw and scissors, maybe a Alox hunstman!
Heck how about a 111mm Alox one hand trekker!

Last year Swissbianco had an Alox OHT prototype with corkscrew and plain edge blade in the works. Unfortunately the plans for production seemed to have fallen through.
:(

Exactly.

I have several SAKs and carry them depending upon my needs.
EDC where I live
Travel to a city
Travel hiking

I use the SAK Mountaineer for hiking - I wish the bottle opener was a small blade or one that comes with the Pioneer Havester - That would be my perfect SAK for hiking/camping. I've even asked around if someone could change to bottle opener for a second blade - no joy.

I'm rethinking the partial serrated blade and might be getting a PE one. So if anyone knows of a SAK the size and tools of the Mountaineer but with a second blade; let me know.

If you're really set on an SAK model that doesn't exist, there's guys who can build you one from parts. BF has a multi-tool forum, and there's tons of info at SOSAKOnline. I've never done it, but where there's a will (or a wallet) there's a way.

The correct reply is "my girlfriend should have it open when she hands it to me". lol

Scibeer (Bill Evans over at SOSAK) is your man if you want a custom SAK. He made me a really nice HA-III Farmer with scissors and pocket clip, and that combo is the bomb. Add a combo tool and small blade, in place of the can and bottle openers, and now you're really in business!
