I thought I wanted the Norton India Stone 8 Inch Fine / Coarse Combo but......

Are they recommended or not a good idea?

Diamonds aren't my cup of tea but they work great for sharpening more wear resistant steels. I'm pretty sure the sharpmaker has ceramics so that should speak for itself with all the praise it gets. Ceramic stones generally do a better job with finishing.
Its all about what your trying to accomplish.

how much of the windex needs to be sprayed on Norton India stone?
also, is it possible to use water and soap on the norton combo stone?

I think because it can get messy.:p

Is a teaspoon or so of oil compared to a washbasin filled with water and splashed all over the stone on a regular, not to mention the mud that is generated. The oil stones make less mess.

For a completely dry and relatively tidy system, I make a block (through my signature below) that only creates some eraser dust as a by product - is worth a look.

All grinding produces swarf and needs to be dealt with some how - even a dry diamond plate will get some shmukus on your finger tips.

Cards 94.. You can use windex or equal on a India/Crystilon Norton stone. Works fine on both sides. These Norton stones are what I keep coming back to after trying them all, water stones included. Phil
THANKS, Mr. Wilson. Have you used a Norton India or Crystalline to sharpening your S90V blades? Thanks, DM

Thanks for the insight folks. I'm going to go with my original plan of buying the Norton India Combo. I will try both the Windex and oil method.
By the way, I'm assuming the stone comes from India?

David, Yes the Crystalon-- fine or medium works very nice for all the steels I use. Including the A11's, CPM S110v and CPM S90V. Surprisingly the India is very effective for taking off the wire edge or burr. I have a DMT fine flat diamond plate, fine grit that is also very good for the burr. I get the dollar store windex in the spray bottle and use on all the stones. Just spray on to get it good and wet, sharpen and rinse in water, quick easy and clean. I also use it for lube coolant on the surface grinder. Phil

You can use windex, simple green, water + dish soap, anything along those lines. Or dry and scrub clean after. You want some sort of cleaning agent because the india stones cone pre-oiled. Using just water can cause the surface to get gummy.

Oil really isn't that messy like HH said. And no, they don't come from india. That started from norton using natural aluminum oxide sourced from india or some such.

Water stones are not easier. So many more variables.

So let me get this straight if I may. :p The Norton India stone combo comes pre-oiled but you don't have to use oil when sharpening your knives if you don't want to?? I can use windex or a water + dish soap solution when sharpening, than rinse off stone. Correct?
