I thought the Buck 110 was a recommended knife?

I remember this thread... but I don't remember if anyone mentioned that the WallyWorld 110 was special - clamshell pack or box, don't they all have the PRC-made nylon sheath rather than the usual Mexican made leather sheath? Of course, the knives come off the line as a 110 and go to whatever order they are filling. I can't imagine they have different 'grades' of the basic 110. Large volume runs/special packaging, less expensive sheath, etc all help to keep their sale price below a small dealer's basic cost. The 110 is the same - and still made by humanoids - as fallible as they are. It's not unheard of, making a poorly fitted 110 - even in the Custom Shop! The key is simple - they'll make it right!

Of course, the OP has gone on - back to pontificating on Spydies and Kershaws. I really think the size/style of his 110 was not to his liking. It isn't for everyone... admittedly, not very tacticool. I sure like 'em, of course. And... I did have to send one back - it was too hard to unlock - and it was a CS special in BG-42 and Micarta/G10, too. Like I said... they use humanoids...

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I find it difficult to believe that someone could not like a 110. A while back, I did call the company and they were open and honest about some of their products being made across the big pond. In my mind, I attempted to be open minded about that decision, but it did not please me by any margin. Of course, this trend to have stuff produced in China has been a factor for most businesses. Buck pretty much HAD to outsource some of their knives.

At any rate, if there were a problem with a 110, Buck would correct things. It is so simple to send the knife off. Satisfaction is just a postal mart away in this case! Of all the hunting camps I've visited, the 110 is by and large the most popular folding knife. And the fact that you can snag one at WM for less than a dealer can buy them is somewhat of a miracle. I don't know of any other large folder you can secure that is US made for that price point. Heck, they say even the man upstairs is using a 110 to open his fan mail and he could have any knife he wanted.

I do believe the OP came around some and he is like my 19 year old son, in that the old school style of the 110 is not what they like best. Kershaw ( which I also have many of) tends to produce more hi tech designs most of which are flipper or AO opening. That is the stuff the kids like today it seems.....

What I don't like about Wally World Bucks is the clamshell packaging they come in.It keeps you from feeling them out first hand.So if the blade has a little side to side play you won't know until you get it home.I got a 110 that way myself. If I could have looked (handled) it first that would'nt have happened.I did fix it in a vice though,so no real lasting problem.

Yes, I agree about the clamshell packaging. I've tried to buy my 110s from Walmarts that still have an actual sporting goods counter where you can get them in the box instead of the clamshell, and although I'm a fan of leather, I think I prefer the nylon sheath for hunting in the elements. I also like that I can put it on horizontally. All of this talk of how great the Walmart price is, is making me want to go out and buy another 110. I do have a 112 on the way in the mail.

I also agree that the younger generation seems to be more interested in the "tactical" knives. Can't fault them as that's probably why I like the 110. It reminds me of what everyone seemed to carry in my youth. When I was a kid starting to hunt, the Buck 110 was the knife to have. It took me until I was 15-16yrs old to get past the junky knock-offs and to actually get my hands on my first actual Buck 110. I think the wait made it all the more special though. I still use a 110 as my hunting knife, and see no reason to change it. In fact I just used it to field dress two deer over the last couple of weeks.

It's okay to whoever started this thread up again, it's fun to post on old threads occassionally, especially this crazy one. If you're going to get a Buck 110, get one off Amazon with a leather sheath for less money than a WalMart Buck 110 with a nylon sheath. Bang, problem solved. I'm 21, and I love my Buck 110. It was my first knife, and everything after it is not really necessary.
