I thought this was intersting...

You can buy a much better grinder for about the same money.

That one is a hobby built unit that would not last long. Wrong motor for one thing (and positioned in the worst possible position).

An Ickles grinder ( same unit as the TKS D-5010R) is $425 from TKS, and is much better than that unit. You don't hear much about them, but these little units are quite portable and work well as an entry level grinder. Flat platen and a 6.75" contact wheel. You can turn it around and use the 3" idler as a small wheel. 2.5X48 belts, 1/2HP TEBB motor.Mount it on a hinged base plate (two door hinges and a piece of plywood) , and you can flip it up to be a vertical unit (or make it flip sideways to be a horizontal grinder). After you get a bigger unit (we all do eventually) use it as a dedicated sharpening unit.

This post reply is not regarding the ebay post, but showing how poorly that unit is designed. This is done for the educational purposes of those researching grinders.( and thus is on topic for this forum)

I like some of it, does not say what the belt length is. A mount so it can go vertical or horizontal would be cool.

I have just about finished building my own horizontal grinder. I converted my square wheel to a AC tech vari-speed drive and ended up with the extra single phase motor off the Wilton. I will try and post pictures in the next week of what I came up with. Mine used 2x72 belts. I will be putting two platens on mine, one for around the small dia. contact wheels and on along one side of the "triangle" about 5 to 6 inchs long. For certain grinding chores (slipjoints) a horizontal grinder is very very nice to have.

I'm with Stacy on that motor. It won't last. It really must be a sealed motor. That thing will fill up with debris and go 'POW!' at some point.
Also, bigger diameter idler wheels (and crowned) are better IMO.

Here is my home built horizontal belt grinder close to being done.

The motor is a tefc motor off my Wilton square wheel. The tracking adjustment is a heavy cast iron unit I picked up in a trade. I made the shaft and the crowned wheel on the lathe. The base is 5/8 inch thick piece of alum. I picked up at the junk dealer. I mounted it on a grinder pedestal. The small wheel holder is off my Wilton and I milled a 1 inch square bar to accept it with two cap screws. I have plenty of adjustment for belt length/different dia. contact wheels. I will make up several platens for the different dia contact wheels.

This thing is heavy!

Ken, That is awesome! I just ordered a welder with my boss (halves) so I plan on trying my hand at building my own tools and such. I love seeing other peoples creations.

My first attempt is going to be the No weld grinder but elded of coarse.
