Hello,

I too am a new/beginner to knifes. I have narrowed down my choices to these three options. Can you experts advise on what would be best for my needs. I will mostly use this knife for camping/hiking/fishing and around the house...

My choices are, not in particular order:

1. Schrade SCHF3N Extreme Survival Fixed Blade Knife
2. SOG Specialty Knives & Tools E37-N SEAL Pup Elite, Straight Edge, Satin
3. Gerber 22-41121 Prodigy Survival Knife

As you can see, I am trying to stay around $50 dollar mark. I would appreciate any comments/recommendations.

PS: I am lefty so can all these sheaths be configured for left handed?

Thank you.

in my opinion the sog is the best out of the bunch, better steel, sheath and IMO better company.

Hope this helps, welcome to the forums! And cheers!

I really like the seal pup elite, I can't imagine a situation where it won't work for your needs. IDK about the sheath of the top of my head though.

Look into Mora Knives alot of guys swear on this brand including myself. They are low cost and high quality.

SOG of those three. The Scrade and Gerbers have inferior blades when compared to SOG. AUS-8 steel is better than the 400 series stuff the other two use. Looks like a more ergo design as well.

SOG - used my SEAL hard for 2.5 years in New Guinea chopping bamboo, coconuts, digging up roots, chipped the edge a few times, sharpened them out, holds a great edge, still one of my favorite knives. Never let me down...

If you're interested in the Schrade Extreme Survival series, I'd recommend taking a look at the SCHF9. They're really pretty decent knives for the money.

Welcome.

If you are going with one of those three brands, then I would go SOG. But not the SEAL Pup. NW Ranger instead. It's full flat grind is the kind that it most appropriate for camping/hiking/fishing. The SEAL Pup is built off military/fighter...and that's not what camping/hiking/fishing is. Unless it is some sort of extreme tactical camping deep behind enemy lines. :D The other two have "survival" in their names, and that is pure marketing silliness. I'd pass.

The Ranger looks nice, Will slice all the things you need to slice while out there having fun in the woods.

I think that most people around here would steer you away from current production knives from Gerber and Schrade.

I second the recommendation for a Mora. It's not too flashy, but they're fine blades and one heck of a good value.
If you're willing to step up your budget a bit, you could get a Becker/Ka-Bar BK-2 that would do real well for you.

Most . . . but not all. I'd definitely stay away from any of the stainless Schrade Extreme Survival knives including the SCHF3. But have you looked at the specs for the SCHF9?

I have a gerber prodigy and love it. It works great. I havent had any of the others but i 100% recommend the gerber. Gerber gets alot of hate but the prodigy is actually one of gerbes made in protland usa knives.

Yes, I have looked at it, looks like a good knife.

Thank you.

The only issue is that the blade is 1095 High Carbon which means it is prone to rust unless it has been treated which the description of the knife doesn't seem to indicate.
