I too am a new/beginner to knifes.

I have a gerber prodigy and love it. It works great. I havent had any of the others but i 100% recommend the gerber. Gerber gets alot of hate but the prodigy is actually one of gerbes made in protland usa knives.

Schrade and Gerber have a lot of stinkers but have a few nice knives. It's hard to sift through and tolerate all the garbage just to get to the 1-2 good ones.

The only issue is that the blade is 1095 High Carbon which means it is prone to rust unless it has been treated which the description of the knife doesn't seem to indicate.

1095 isn't going to turn to orange dust and crumble away the first time it gets wet. Wipe off the blade, don't store it in its sheath, maybe put some mineral oil or wax on it....it's fine. And it's inexpensive, rugged, and easy to sharpen.

Yes, of course. If you take proper care of the knife it should be fine. However, it is a factor to consider when buying a knife. Some require more maintenace than others but 1095 steel is good steel.

As a fellow lefty, I highly recommend the SOG Seal Pup, with a few caveats. The satin finish is nice, but my field dressing experience on hogs and deer shows that the powdercoat that SOG applies to the SP's blade sheds water like a duck... even blood will not stick to this coating, just beads up and wipes/washes off! Also, I would seriously consider getting an aftermarket kydex sheath for the pup, as the standard sheath is kinda bulky for my taste. I personally have no experience with the NW Ranger, but would definitely consider it as a serious contender to the Seal Pup. The SCHF9 by schrade is less hunting, more survival geared.

I would reconsider your choices
look into

Fallkniven
Bark River Knife and Tool
Blind Horse Knives

Moras are great for fishing and hunting but if you need to chop or batton while camping, bring a hachet or dont use a more. The sog would definetly be the best out of those 3. I do own a prodigy though, the sheath is great and it holds an edge pretty well.
