I turn to you. 5.0 vs 4.1 which one to keep?

I need your help. My dad's recently gone through cancer surgery and while general healthcare in Canada is free it's all the little things that aren't, and I've been helping my parents pay for these medical bills as all of this happened to land on a bad time for them financially. I am very happy to help them out. That's the back story.
The reason I turn to you and ask for your aid is that just as I thought my dad was fine, he had a little relapse (he's fine now), but it has stacked up the medical bills yet again. I just got my GSO 5.0 in the mail the other day, and I've been enjoying my 4.1 for about 2 months. It is with a heavy heart that I must sell one of these to help me cover these costs. The question is: Which one do I keep?

I know this is a generally personal question, but I love both and just looking for some opinions. The 4.1 sits comfortably among my other knives as most are in that 4 inch range and I have come to enjoy using. I honestly ordered the 4.1 as an after thought because the price was too good and it has become one of my go to knives; it really is perfect as a utility knife. My 5.0 is relatively new to me and I don't own many in this size range. I like the bigger handle and it cuts well (though not as well as my 4.1 I find). I have been wanting a 5.0 since I sold my 5.1 to help pay for an engagement ring and the heft it has really does feel great and feels like it can get a lot of work done. The way the bills are stacked against me one has to sadly go before I even get the chance to fully appreciate the 5.0 (unless it stays). I also tend to pair a knife with an axe or hatchet for my uses so both sizes are good for that.

Based on your experiences what say you Survivors? Again, there is no definitive answer, but just looking for the experience of others and some suggestion.

Hell, I could just sell both and not make a decision, but I really would like to keep one.

Help.

*Sorry about the long windedness, but sleep deprivation has me rambling. Working a lot of extra hours.

Sorry to hear that your dad is having problems. Also sorry to hear one of those beauty's has to go. I've only used my wife's 4.1 one time and don't have a 5 I would say the 4.1 though since the 5 is not being made any more and will less likely be harder to find if you did replace it later. Just my .o2 cents.

I would go with the 4.1 (as you seem to find that it suits your cutting tasks better) if I had an axe around for the heavier stuff.

Hope that things brighten up for you and your family!

Sorry about your father's medical issues.

You mentioned that you have a number of other knives in the 4" range and not so many in the 5" range. Combine that with the lack of future production of the GSO 5 and I would keep the 5 and sell the 4.1, if it were me. You can always get another 4.1 at a later date.

Gentlemen,

There is way too much tragedy in our little community lately. Really sorry to hear your news, Falcon. Seeing the need in your situation, I'd say Béma and Blues give great reasoning for each "side of the coin".

A better cutter that would compliment an ax better vs a knife in a size that is not redundant for your collection and one that won't be available any more.

What's more important to you?

I have a lot of prayers aimed at forum members lately and you and your dad are on the list my friend.

I appreciate the kind words for my dad from everyone. It's been a crazy year, and I'm sorry to hear more people in the community have also had it rough as Silver Needle mentioned. All the best to anyone going through rough times.

All good points. I honestly didn't think the 4.1 would appeal to me as much as it has when I got it. It's a workhorse, and it's very portable not menacing if you are in a public space. The 5.0 I've had limited experience with, but it's a hell of a blade. It feels great in the hand, and I'm sure re working the edge mildly I could make it cut the same. I know I could get a new 4.1 easily enough, but selling the 5.0 would make make me go bigger in future. Right now the only big blade I have left is my BK5 (Awesome blade), which I use a lot for big kitchen jobs and as a sort of mini machete. It has made me re-evaluate the Chopper, as it is fun to work with big knives and is approximately the same length as the 8.0 will be which looks amazing. This is the problem, the moment I think I have made any sort of decision my brain gets rolling thinking about the future and what I could get. Though right now leaning a bit towards keeping the 5. I think I'll run some handle tests and see what's more comfortable. It is nice to know with the 5 that it can do mild chopping if needed and I'm sure it'll gut fish just as well as the 4.1.

More opinions are very welcome.

I would put them both for sale in a single thread both priced the same and stipulate that as soon as one is sold the other is withdrawn and let a buyer decide for you. That way you dont have to think about it. Either knife is a badass.

Or another way to look at it is to keep the 5 because the 5 will never be made again.

Or sell both to maximize your dad's assistance and wait till you can pick up another one. Guy will make more. Your family is the most important thing here. Lets face it. The knife is replacable. Doing right by your pops can never be made up

If there is one thing I really like about our community, is it seems to be filled with standup individuals that do right by friends and family. I agree with needle though that it is very unfortunate to see so much need for that right now. As for the OP, GF I genuinely hope your father stays on the mend, my mother got and beat a rare form of breast cancer a few years ago and it can be very stressful, but it seems liek you are doing everything in your power to help.

As for the question, I would have a hard time telling you which to sell, I think the 5.0 is more rare (hard to replace) but may fetch a higher price... the 4.1 is my favorite survive knife, but come up on the forums/bay more often. Whatever you decide take peace in knowing that your reasons could not be more noble and life will surely reward you, whichever decision you make.

I think I may take your advice Riz on letting the buyer decide or just sell the 5 as it fetches more (let's face it I can get away with a new 6). I've been working pretty crazy hours so I don't need to sell both but the benefit of selling one would help me sleep better financially. I've already sold off most of knife addiction (let's face it, collection is the polite term) to secure funds for all these expenses. I thought it was all done, but shit happens and you are right; my pops is first no matter what. I just paid for my wedding and medical bills all in the same few months so it's just been a huge expenditure overall and I thought I was out of the woods but it is what it is and knives will come and go.

Glad to hear your mom pulled through man, always good nice to hear the good stories. This has been extra stressful for me because my grandad, which was also my first experience with a family death, passed away from the same thing and there have been lots of parallel moments so...yeah.

The 4.1 was sort of a sleeper for me. I really enjoy using it, especially with a sagewood dangler. It's been my go to the last couple of months. It's also not a scary size for non knife people when you are out and about. I find an axe doesn't tend to scare people as much as the knife, which is kind of amusing.

Here is to hoping and praying that your dad remains on the mend. As far as which knife to sell/keep, I cannot add to anything that has not already been discussed. Both are great, and whichever one you choose to keep will serve you well.

I just wanted to say thank you to you guys for your help. Sold both today. Family does come first, and, well, now I have no reason not to get the 4.5 later on down the road without fear of doubling up. I guess I should have posted some use photos or something so I could get my survivor number, but that will come later. Thanks again everyone, it's people like you that make this community worthwhile.

Shame you had to sell them, but family DOES come first. I have a chunk of money in a savings account that was to go toward a supercharger for my car... that may get used for bills so my wife can take a leave of absence from work to be with her mom before the end instead. And that's okay.

Good on you, Grey. You're correct - family does come first. If only more of the world thought and acted that way... Sending some prayers up for your father and yourself. Guys, if your old man is still around give him a manly hug and be thankful for the time he invested in your life.

Clearly you made the most selfless decision, I just hate it came down to that and that you had to sell off some really good gear. Prayers to your dad and family.

Don't worry about the pics if you really want a number. The guy who made the SURVIVOR! thread is pretty cool and really good looking and would probably let it slide.

Yeah, family really is first. It's easy to forget how much your parents did for you, and even rarer getting an opportunity to help them out for a lifetime of kindness. Gear comes and goes. I won't be going knifeless anytime soon.

Skrapmetal I feel ya buddy. There's always more important things. I hope your wife gets as much time with her mom as she can. Spending time with people before they go is one of those things you just can't get back.

I make a motion to give him a Survivor! Number! He is good in my book.
