I venture forth... With only a Pemberton!

That's right, you read it correctly. I've decided to go forth today on my errands and day's activities with just the humble little 2-blade Pemberton! This is virtually unheard-of for me, so wish me luck and cheer me on as I boldly walk out the door with just this diminutive jackknife as my companion.

The ever-present 55 is on liberty for the day as I do this, getting some well deserved rest in my safe.

I've got half a dozen errands to run including coffee with a former co-worker who also recently retired. I read a few of Carl's stories early this morning to encourage myself in preparation for this! :)

Wish me luck!

Heck, I remember something about Carl using his peanut to carve out a rump roast from an elephant that had been taken down by Lions. Carl used the rump for food while traveling from Nairobi to Gaborone. He traveled all the way on foot with nothing but a peanut. He built shelters, defended against the big cats, procured food..... all with that little peanut. I'm sure you will figure it out.

Now Woodrow, how many times have ya I asked to stop elaborating these exploits?

I didn't walk all the way. When I got to the greater Gazoka river, I used the peanut to notch the base of some trees like Mr. Van would have done, and once I had them down, I made a raft to float a good hundred miles. Of course there was the crocs and hippo's to deal with, but that's another story!

The only problem with this is that once you do it and realize that the Pemberton was more than enough, you'll go back and look at your other knives, which I'm assuming are larger, and feel kinda silly that you thought you needed them to make it through the day.

Right
Now the real question is, whether you actually do any cutting!

Things you could have torn open with your hands do not count, so no envelopes and no french bread... Ok, french bread maybe, IF you also have some cheese and salami to cut.. LOL! (of course you could just buy sliced bread, sliced cheese and sliced salami.) OTOH, if you need to open a bag of potato chips, well, I guess that counts, they are hard to tear open...

Count me as skeptical, all these people with peanut sized knives, who say its all they need. Im starting to think they dont need a knife at all :-). Oh, and taking pictures of the knife in various poses does not count either, unless its actually Cutting Something!

Im not against carrying small knives, but lets be honest, did you even use a pocket knife today? Oh, and cutting a steak doesnt count either, unless you were somewhere with no other knife available, that means, not at a restaurant, and not at home..

Color me skeptical, even though I also have and carry a Pemberton sized knife, and enjoy it, there are days it just gets CE and CF (chicken eyed and Coon fingered). I keep looking for excuses to use it though :-), so I bought unsliced french bread, cheese, and salami... and though my Pemby sized knife can handle it, I prefer my Charlow sized knife for food..

So, Im throwing down the gauntlet as a friendly challenge, What did your Pemby cut today?:-)

Carl said in another post 'when you carry a knife, you won't necessarily use it every day, but there will be days where you have tasks where nothing other than a knife will do'. As an apple-slaying office worker, I take comfort from this saying. :)

Hey, I have a Pemberton from that exact run: 2-blade in Autumn Gold. Right smart-looking little-fella you got there. I love the way these came out!

I haven't used mine yet, other than to sharpen the blades, because I bought mine with a Boys Knife which hasn't left my pocket yet. I'm interested to see how yours does today. It's a good reminder to me that I need to put it through it's paces. Slay some dragons with it or something. :-) Have fun with yours!

Really, so anyone who can get by with something like a peanut or Vic classic doesn't really need a knife? Wow thanks for the info, this will save me a lot of money.

Anyone hear from Arizonaranchman recently...?

You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din! ;)

 I think you need to write a book with all of your peanut exploits.

Does cutting loose leaf paper into tiny shreds so it fits into your recycle bin better count as "using"?

Right

I bet there are people who never travel a single mile in their model railroads, who still buy more model train cars. ;)
