I want a "big" knife

I have a few relatively inexpensive knives such as: Spyderco Endura, Benchmade Eclipse, and Ka-Bar USMC. I am thinking of purchasing a somewhat larger knife, perhaps Bowie-style for several reasons:

1. I like them.
2. If I came across a dog attack in progress, or was in an area where I might be attacked by a large dog, I would like a knife that would work well for chopping, slashing, and thrusting.
3. I like them.
4. Something like a Case XX would fit under the car seat or in the glove box (if it's a big glove box) better than a machete.

The reason I mention dog attacks is that they happen fairly commonly in the city where I live, and some who have tried helping people who were being bitten were themselves bitten. Recently, two pit bulls got loose and bit seven people, including a guy who squirted them with a hose to try to make them stop biting some children they had attacked.

I was considering the Case XX Bowie. It's big and heavy, which I kind of like. It also costs a lot less than a Cold Steel Trailmaster. Does anyone else have any suggestions, particularly in the lower end of the price scale?

Also, here's a little disclaimer: I'm not a particularly violent person, and have no desire to kill dogs or anything else. However, I have been bitten more than once, and my son was bitten by a rottweiler when he was 6 years old. Fortunately he only got six stitches, which indicates that the rottweiler was maybe just joking. The rottweiler is still alive, although animal control is aware of him now.

Having said that, if the guy mentioned above had chopped the pit bulls in half instead of squirting them with a hose, he might have experienced less perforations to his own person.

Additionally, does anyone know if pepper spray works on dogs?

Thanks,
Biff

Biff, welcome to the forums! A good choice might be the Cold Steel Bush Ranger. 7" bowie blade, about $70. I've got one and for the price I'm quite happy with it. It would be more than suitable for the defense applications you're talking about and will fit better than a machette! I just hope you don't have to use it against any dogs

Hope this helps.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

I think an endura would be pretty effective on a dog, but I can understand where your coming from. If I were you I would make sure that I was well versed in the carry laws where I live before I start carrying a bowie around. Alot of laws say no blades over 5.5" concealed. A Sifu would fit that bill well, and be easier to carry since its a folder. A good Bowie can't be beat though for strength and usability. You might be better off trying to find one with a 5 or 6" blade though. You don't need to punch a hole in one side and out the other for the dog to feel it. And the closer you are to legal carry size the less of a chance there is for a problem to come up.Good luck finding a knife. If it was my choice, I'd just give the pit bull accute indigestion, probably with an 870 express

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

You should check out the Ontario "Spec Plus" line of military type blades.
A few great bowie type knives in that lineup that would fill the bill for what your looking for. Best of all, they're all under the $50.00-$60.00 mark.
Blades are epoxy coated 1095 hardened about Rc58 methinks. Kraton handles, most have Cordura/leather sheaths which aren't too bad. I have most of them and they are well worth the price, in my opinion.
As for Pepper Spray.
Get the strongest you can find. I used to work as a meter reader and have had more encounters with large, nasty dogs than I care to remember.
My one piece of advice: Get the MOST POTENT Spray you can find.
Some dogs are really focused when they are attempting to chew pieces of your anatomy off and do not respond well to the weaker crap that is out there.(I went thru several cans of the stuff on that job). And you know, it's no fun trying to beat off a large angry dog with your hands and feet.
Find some made for bears, I believe that has a greater concentration of Oleoresin Capsacium.
I hope this helps. Hopefully, members of the Forum with more experience than mine will chime in with some name brands and possibly better alternatives.

You want a large bowie style knife? Ok I'll give you actual suggestions and not try to convince to buy something else, I assume you've taken local laws into consideration so here goes: As far as I can see there are only a few choices.
If you'd be willing to spend the money, I'd suggest a Livesay HKR. http://members.tripod.com/~Newt_Livesay/index.html
It costs about $200 but will outlast, outpreform most any other Bowie knife I know of. You could stop an grizzly atack with it.

Another knife, now that I think about it might be a better choice, would be the Ontario made Bagwell designed bowies. http://knifecenter.com
Once again these are slightly on the upper end of the production bowie price range but they are worth it.(still cheaper than a Trailmaster)
If neither of these are what you're looking for I'd would suggest the 15in. Gerber Bowie (also at the knifecenter) over the Case Bowie. Hope this helps

If you are interested in Cold Steel check out their factory seconds. Bush Rangers for $49.99 and SRK's for $39.99. Either would work well for doggie dissuasion.

Have to agree with misque on this one. Ontario SP's are probably the best value in knifedom. Presently only have one Ontario, the 10" tanto. This could be just your ticket for the purpose your looking for. Picked mine up for $35.

Here's a couple suggestions. If you are determined to stay under $100, the Ontario line is the place to look. If you want to double that limit, Livesay is a great choice, as is Busse Basic #7 or #9. I've got to say that a wild dog problem would be just the reason I've been looking for to add a khukri (sp?) to my collection. Think about it. Chopping, slashing, stabbing-all together in one lethal package. And DEFINATELY go with pepper spray made for bears. Do a search for pepper spray in the Blade Discussion Year #1 forum and you'll see a couple threads that will help you find some, if I remember correctly. Good luck, and remember-the pepper spray is the best first defense against canines.

The way you're talking, I think I'd go for a machete from AKI Knife and Machete. They're pretty big, and more useful as a "tool" for hacking brush (honest, Mr. Officer

). Machetes have also been employed very well by many people as a weapon.

I've always carried 4" folders with me for the rampant stray dogs we have in my town. Well, wouldn't you know it, I got charged by a dog and I wasn't carrying my knife that one day! Didn't even realize it until I reached down and found just the edge of my pocket where my Cold Steel Voyager should have been. Luckily the dog broke off the charge just a few feet away from me, and after a few more false charges, finally lost interest in me as I shouted at it.
I've upped the ante since then. Now that the dog threat (our town doesn't have a dog pound to pick up strays) is very real, I carry an ASP baton when I'm out walking. I like the idea of being 17" away from the chomping teeth, and not drawing a whole lot of blood in the process of defense. Not only am I be less likely to be bitten, but third parties will be less likely to demonize me than if they saw me pulling a scene from Phsyco.

Biff,
Nothing wrong with the Case Bowie, and some of the other suggestions, if you really mean a Bowie at the Low-End, you may want to consider Frost Cutlery's CW-533D/BSC. It's on the front page of their Winter Supplement, 14" OAL, brass guard, blade etched, saw cut bone handle, it doesn't mention the steel used (I wonder why?) all for just $24.99, and yes it does look like a Bowie knife.
This is not a recommendation from me, just information and maybe an option for you.

There toll free number is 1-800-251-7768, maybe they can send you the supplement, or give you additional info.

For those inquiring minds that want to know why I'm getting Frost Cutlery Supplements? I have no control over who sends me stuff!

This is unbelievably cool. Thanks to all for your responses and advice. I had forgotten about those Ontario knives - I'll have to check them out. I realize the Frost knives are cheap and would probably dissuade an aggressive pooch, but I'd hate to admit that I actually owned one.

As far as concealed carry, my understanding is that here in California, ANY fixed blade is illegal. I was thinking primarily of a knife to keep in the car. Also, carrying a baton for dog (or other predator) protection is a felony, but canes, big knives if exposed, etc. are legal. Go figure. I have a couple of decent folders (Spyderco, Benchmade) that I can clip into my pocket.

Thanks again.

The CA people seem to really like the SIFU's. I am a real animal lover, but I can't help but think about the Hossum bowie vs. leg of lamb review while reading this thread.
biggrin.gif
I'm sure it would do the trick, however in your legal environment I would guess pepper spray is easily your best and safest choice. Best to have both, you never know how the dogs owner may react...

Good one Snoopy!

I guess great minds think alike - althroughout this post I was thinking "Hossom versus Leg of Lamb." Hossom is certainly if ot my most fave custom maker.

I don't think the rottweiler will stand a chance, he might get one lucky punch in but as long as you can still move he's a gonner

nyahah

which reminds me can some one suggest a place I can mail order an ASP baton for cheap?

If you consider buying a slightly bigger knife you could go with the Cold Steel LTC Kukri- 12 inch blade, a great chopper!

Ahhh big bowies!

Ontario "Survival bowie" or "Marine Raider" would make nice inexpensive choices. If you wouldn`t mind waiting a few months Dale Sandberg at EightDollarMountainFoundry makes some great fighting bowies for $100 or less. I have one of his big 12" Trenchbowies. 3/16" blued blade, knuckle guard with a steel plate pommel wrapped in paracord. It would give you the option of popping the dog in the chops, doing pommel strikes or heh..the blade. Tough as dogs are I`m pretty sure it would turn a Rotty gone bad into puppy sushi in no time.

well you could always get The Cold Steel Bushman, or anything by ontario, but if you want to give that dog some hart burn, get a flare gun
biggrin.gif

by the way are those legal to carry concealed in your truck?

This is an alternate suggestion for a big knife, but I have a walking stick made by cold steel called the walkabout. It makes a very good dog deterrent. It also just looks like an innocent cane. Of course I always carry a big folder. Here lately is`t been the sifu.

Timmy is right. the most cost-effective solution is the Cold Steel Bushman. I bought 6 for $10.00 each and scattered them around the areas I frequent
