I want a "big" knife

Take a look at Rigid's Bear Tracker Bowie; it's well made, comes with a pretty nice sheath, and has a 9 1/8" long 3/16" thick blade. This knife has more weight to it than the Bush Ranger ( a fine knife). They can be purchased new at Blow-Out Knives for $75. However, they are made from 420J2 stainless, which isn't that great at holding an edge, but is pretty corrosion resistent.
Please keep in mind that the best way to kill an animal with a knife is to hit the heart and lungs repeatedly, death from shock and blood loss is immediate. Slashing would make them really angry. A short spear as a walking stick migt be a better weapon.

Hey dont they use a kukri in many ceremonies to lob the head off of rather large animals in one stroke. Hmmm would certainly send a clear message about leash laws wouldnt it

How about a Cold Steel shovel? It might be easy to explain underneath the front seat of your car. Mike has one in his sale list. Most trenching tools would deliver quite a solid blow. I have the East German model with a fold out pick as well.

A H.I. 20" Sirupati would be my first pick. It is reasonably fast, delivers a solid blow, delivers a serious cut, and I will have to close 15" less.

Have you checked out the Big Country knives at Knifeware.com ? Ken Warner has 2 versions out that are really fine tools. The sheath allows you to carry the thing "unconcealed." Definitely worth a look. They are $99 and well made.
