I want a BKRT Aurora...but I don't like convex. Also this is Pitdog's fault.

That's not fair Pit' I can't resist those Snowy River type knives!.....The Skookum looks like a knife you want to find under your Christmas tree, at least I would!

I've got your scandi grind BR right here:

Dammit. I hate being a weak minded conformist.

I just sold off the vast majority of my BRKT collection at the end of last week.

Then I popped into this thread.

My Amboynia handled Snowy River Guardless should be here in a few days.:o

I think others have already mentioned some good suggestions. Koster bushcraft, Skookum, etc.

I have the koster and the Aurora and the Aurora handle is my favorite of almost any knife.

If you are having curl problems with a convex grind, it is not sharp enough. Even though the bark river's come sharper than any other knife brand I have ever bought, I did a bit of sharpening and polishing and the Aurora is now the best fuzz stick maker that I have. This even includes my Koster (which is a prototype). Being a prototype, it was ground at about 10 degrees per side, and is ridiculously sharp. But, for some reason, the Aurora does better curls. I love convex grinds.

Did I mention that I love the handle :)

I am glad to hear this...I can't wait for mine...should be soon..I ordered about 7 months ago. Gene

 on the Skookum. I waited months for mine and use it everyday. I make up things to use it on! Got mine in O2, has a nice patina developing, and is sharp as heck!

Well worth the money, IMHO.

Hey misanthropist,

What convex grind knife do you have that you don't like the performance of?

Because I have a one time offer.......if you send it to me, I will make sure your convex grind is screamin......and pay to ship it back.

Just let me know........

To be honest I hardly have anything at the moment that is convexed - I think just an old Kabar folder that belonged to my grandfather, and of course my axes.

I guess you could also say, though, that everything I have is convexed because I don't own a sharpening "system" just a lot of water stones.

Getting them sharp enough is not really an issue but man, thanks for that generous offer (and I don't doubt that you could do a better job than me - I am definitely just an amateur.) But I can comfortably shave my face with anything I own if I have just finished with it...I can't see there being much more "useable" sharpness than that.

No, it's more a matter of the way convex edges "track" in wood. But you know since I just hand grind everything anyway, it all ends up with a semi-flat semi-convex grind of whatever angle I think will be useful.

Anyway you guys have sure given me plenty to consider...the Skookum was in the back of my head, as was the Koster so they've moved up to the front of my head, and convex grind concerns have moved from the front of my head to the back, so I feel like I've got a few options now.

I don't think I've ever said so but maybe now's the time: of all the forums I go to - mainly gun and survival forums - there is no place with the sense of community I get here in WSS. I read way more than I post and I'm hardly a big shot regular with a huge post count, but my little question got almost thirty responses and an offer from someone who would put out his own time and money to help fix a problem for me.

You guys are sure a pretty cool bunch, I'm really glad I found this place!

Brain andrews you know how to push a knife lovers buttons! sweet mellliiissssaaa those curls are sweeet! Where do I send my knives?!!!

Just a quick chime in here, the title of this thread makes me laugh everytime I see it...:D

I agree with some of the others. Forget the rest, order a Skookum, if you like this sort of knife. Rod runs a one man shop, has plenty of orders *because* it is such a great knife. Use your Mora until the Skookum arrives. Give yourself something to look forward to! You won't regret it. My Skookum is perfection in fit & finish, heat treat, wood working geometry, and a handle that must be used to fully appreciate. :)

Here is an opinion, which must be special because I am posting it.:) I do not own a Skookum, but that is partially because I did not care for the shape of it. I wanted a full tang scandi, but much prefer a point that is lower. It seems like the best general use knives have the point at the midline of the blade. It makes a difference. I am currently carrying the EnZo Trapper 95. It meets all the criteria. The point is about 1/3 down the width of the blade. I would prefer it to be lower, but it the rest of the knife's strong points make up for it. You can get the blade by itself at Ben's Backwoods, and then put on the handle of your choice. You can also search EnZo Trapper. They are available as complete knives as well, or kits, from a couple places in the States and some across the pond.

Did you say you like Bark Rivers but like Scandi grinds ?
Scandi_Proto_Combo_Elder.jpg

This knife was a one-off that Mike did, using a Brusletto (?) blade. It is NOT a Snowy River of any sort! You'd have to contact a Bark River dealer to see if it's still available. Or contact Mike to see if he'd do one for you!

IF we ALL ask Mike for one maybe he'll put them into the production rotation!

He might! He tends to be very responsive to user input!

But it will likely have at least a convex edge if not grind! And I wouldn't have it any other way! :D

I like the point in the midline too. However I really like the Skookum because of all the blades like this I have it is the THINNEST.

I hear you HD, the thinner slices better. I liked this one because it had a higher grind. The higher grind gives a thinner edge angle, even w/ thicker stock. It cuts cardboard like a hot knife, which my Brusletto would not do, even w/ the thinner blade. I notice many of the zero ground knives have a very short grind, which makes the thickness very important. Also, the Trapper skeletonizes the tang below the scales, so it balances better than a comparable full tang.
I don't mean to knock anyone's choices in my rambling, like I said, I don't own the Skookum. I simply hope to point out some of the differences I see. Also, my uses most likely vary considerably from everyone else's.
