I have an idea for a fairly brutal chopper that id like to be custom made. I want to be fairly utilitarian as its going to be used and not in a case somewhere. Its a fairly simple design, basically a cleaver with a handguard, but i dont really know which companies to contact about it.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I just got a cleaver-ish chopper from Ben Tendick(Ben R.T. on BF), hit him up, his work is awesome and his priced are even better. Check out B.R.T Bladeworks on Facebook too-he's got a ton of pics of his work and he's made a few nice choppers lately. Also Jose Diaz makes a competition cutter thats got the cleaver look and its not real pricey. And I think Fry Custom Knives will make to your design for a good price. You should start a thread in the makers area asking for a cleaver style chopper, I bet you'll get some good options.

Drop Scott Gossman an email or PM, see Gossman Forum.

Scott made a custom for me and he was a pleasure to work with, his blades are made to be used!!

Do you have a specific steel in mind?

Not really, id like it to be fairly tough and rust resistant so a good stainless steel would be nice. I want the blade to be 1/4 thick(or maybe more depending on what the maker recommends) and ground for serious chopping only, maybe a convex grind?

Im not super up on steels so id leave that up to the maker of said knife.

Try John of JK knives. Hardworking tools at VERY reasonable prices. He has a forum here.

One maker I reccomened would be David Williamson of Ozark Traditional knives( blackcatt on BF). He works with alot of different steels and his work is always impressive!

I wish you luck. I have emailed makers, asked in their posts about work, and PM'd them.

So far, 4 tries, 0 replies. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, so I hope you have better luck than me. Just my personal experience, yours may vary. Not pointing fingers, just making a statement.

Ive had that happen before when i custom ordered guitar fx pedals, i just consider it part of the weeding out process, if they cant contact you back i dont see the point in using them.

most of the custom guys under the $300 mark are working with carbon steels.
put some ceracoat on that and it'll be plenty rust resistant. :)
check JK or KFU -- both do basic stuff VERY reasonably.

Get a cheap grinder or a file set and a slab of steel. Grind it out yourself, and then send it off to Darrin Sanders on here for heat treat. Won't come out as nice and pretty, but it will be very satisfying to make the knife you want yourself.

I have a cleaver from a knife maker buddy of mine, great piece.

I also have a cleaverish type chopper, no hand guard though. It's going up for sale soon, but I do really enjoy it. As said before, it's excellent quality. I just got nothing to use it for.

Hey Murphnuge, thats the Sinister chopper from Ben right? I suggested Ben right away as I just got my custom chopper from him and its perfect.
Antihero, I'm putting pics of my two newest choppers on here, one is a normal drop point but its wide like a cleaver-2-1/4 inches by 9 inches long and only $285 the other is a bit more snub nosed(it was supposed to be squared off but after a miss communication it was too far to done to have it altered w/o losing over an inch of blade) and it's also a 9" blade and it too is only $285, and both makers have pretty quick turn around time.

These I found trolling the web for flat nose cleaver style choppers, they're made by Matt Lamey

This is from Fry Custom Knives-it would be easy to get this with a squared nose and look cool too.

Then of course there's Bill Siegle's Chinese Chopper, which I think is one of the best designs

The Lamey's and Kelsey Creek ones are very cool! I actually contacted Andy already to see if i could get a Bowlegged Chopper and apparently they are discontinued.

Thanks for the pics.

Hey Brewcitymike, yes it is the Sinister II chopper. Sorry I thought I had typed that, but looking back it must not have slipped between auto save and my photobucket. Ben does excellent work!
