I want a good .22LR

In the next month or so, I'll be in the market for a new rifle .22 LR, about $500 or $600 before the scope. I'll be looking through the irons for the first few hundred rounds. Somebody mentioned a Kimber in another thread a few days ago. Then I watched that S&W MP-15 video. Anybody? Bueller?

So what are you going to use it for- plinking, competition, hunting?

.22 LR is the Energizer Bunny of firearms. I currently own Ruger 10/22's, CZ 452 and Savage-have owned Marlins, Colt, Mossberg. None have disappointed. Never owned an Anschultz or Winchester,

I use CMMG's .22 conversion unit in my ARs. None of the dedicated .22 uppers or AR style rifles I've seen shot at my range set the world on fire accuracy-wise at 100 yards.

You'll want to try a wide variety of ammunition to see what shoots best in whatever you eventually buy. I plink with bulk pack Federals, WW Dynapoints..hunted with CCI Velocitors and Wolf Match Extra for precision target..well as precise as I get.

Irons are OK although I have scopes on all my rimfires- getting old ...and so are my eyes.

Have fun.

Plinking and maybe a little squirrel hunting. I need accurate to about 50 yds. Not afraid to spend the money on decent ammo. I just want a good out of the box gun.

I have an Anschutz 1416.It is an extremly nice accurate rifle.Other than that I would buy a Kimber or the CZ 452.The CZ is probably the least expensive. The Anschutz has a 2.2 lb target trigger pull.you need a great trigger for accuracy.I can shoot 5 shot one hole size groups at 50 yards just slightly larger than the 22 cal. bullet diameter.

Im not much into .22s but my dad gave me a browning lever action that was his in the 1970's. hit a squirrel at 100 yards with it. Scary accurate. Not sure if they still make that kind of quality today (dont own any other brownings either) but if it even comes close to their older rifles the quality will be great.

And buy decent ammo. 22 LR is cheap as dirt even for good stuff, i use remington yellow jacket hp and so far it hasnt let me down.

Some people I know have a monthly shooting contest. I want to kick their collective butts. :) But I don't own a .22. :o

I would go with a CZ452 w/tech sights. I love shooting with a good set of irons, even up to 100yds. Aperture sights are quite fun and accurate.

I read somewhere that if you want to really buy "smart" for a .22LR, you should go with a CZ-452, and after buying one myself I would tend to agree with that. It's one helluva gun for the price. I got my military trainer version for 350 bones early this summer. Save spending a LOT more money I can't think of a nicer 22 that you could get. It is also one of the prettiest .22 bolt action rifles I have ever seen.

I have shot a couple .22LR Anschutz competition rimfire rifles, not sure what model, but I can attest that they are very good rifles. I'm fairly sure that any Anschutz you buy will be more expensive than a CZ 452 though. If you want to spend the money on one though I don't think you could really be that disappointed.

With the CZ you're also saving a bunch of coin, even after you put a scope on it, and that leaves you with a LOT of extra money for ammo and whatever your heart desires to do to the gun, although I would suggest after putting several hundred rounds through mine they don't need much improvement.

I own a 10/22 as well and I think it has over the years cured me of the allure of a semi-auto .22LR. I've ended up wasting more ammo through that gun than anything else. The bolt action is much more fun and really helps me focus on technique and shooting, which is really one of the main reasons I have a .22.

Did I mention the CZ is a beautiful gun?

Nice rig, but I don't think anyone needs to run out and replace the sights on the 452 Trainer. They're very good as is.

Be sure and check out the Ruger 77/22. This bolt action comes in varius styles, but the Varmit, heavy barrel, with non polished stainless steel, a laminated wood stock, is hard to beat. Only complaint I have had with mine, was the factory trigger, but I hear they have changed to a much better trigger now, so that should not be problem. I own several semi auto .22 rifles, and they have their place, but a good bolt action sure beats them all for accuracy.

 The 77/22 is a great combo. I have had mine for about 8 years now w/ a Simmons 4x12x50mm target scope (discontinued now I think) & Harris bi-pod. Is super out to about 75-100 yds. I recently bought a .17cal. in the same model, this caliber is hard to beat & shoots double the distance. A friend has the Anschutz, great shooting gun as well. Don't overlook the Ruger 10/22 because of the low cost. I had the trigger worked on mine to lighten it just a tad & it will shoot just as well as any of the bolt actions I have. You can't really go wrong with any of the above rifles that all the guys have mentioned, just comes down to your personal taste & features. Good luck.
Be safe.

There is ONLY ONE really good 22 rifle on the market: The Ruger 10/22. All others are pale imitations.....! I'm sure I'll get lambasted for this one but so be it. My faith is solid.

The Ruger 10/22 is a fine rifle if you replace the barrel, trigger and stock.:):)

I have quite a few 22's. Depending on what your preference is: the GSG is a fun plinker, the 77/22(VBZ) gives you classic style and excellent accuracy, the 10/22 is a great all round gun which is easy to modify.

If you want the most accurate sporter you can buy here it is,Anschutz 1416.It's a crappy inside picture but this is the one and it's at your upper limit if you look around.I gave $600 for this one new.

An economical .22 rifle is the Remington 597.

The Ruger 10/22 has tons of aftermarket items to choose from.

For pistols, I like the Browning Buckmark.

I'll keep the Anshcutz in mind also. I want a good one without spending three grand.
