I want a Hudson Bay. I think.

I am in a phase where work and life are getting in the way of getting outside, and like probably most of us I'm compensating by drooling over stuff I want and maybe snagging something here and there to get me through. I love a smallish axe. There's a "trade hatchet" in a Ray Mears bushcraft episode that I wish I could find or match - it's essentially a tomahawk-sized hudson's bay. Does anyone know a) what exactly it is and b)where I could get one or something very similar?

Axe is at the 4:30 mark.

Sorry, no idea where to find a trade axe like the one in the video but have you looked at the Gransfors Bruks Outdoor or Hunter's axe? Not exactly what you're looking for but maybe something along those lines?
I'm sure some very knowledgeable members will be along with some excellent recommendations.

Check out Rinaldi axes

Also the Cold Steel Hudson Bay Tomahawk, on the bottom.

Ragweedforge.com. has a nice assortment of of hat hers and axes!
Also Granfors Bruks makes trade axes as well......There's a French and English version .

Visit both websites and you should find what you seek!!!! Good luck and make sure to show us what you get!!!!!

C cyc79 I got ahold of an outdoor axe, and it's a lovely tool. (It lives in my day bag.) But I can always find room for another one. :D

Thanks fellas, I've never really considered the Rinaldis before, I'll take a gander. I'm a sucker for a small, hatchet-ish, tomahawk-ish hand axe. The Chogans are well loved by a number of people I know, but I find them too heavy for my taste. I'd want an actual axe handle for a head that weighty.

Same, although I seldom buy them new. I’m fortunate I can carry one every day, and have a small herd to choose from. Most are old or antique that I’ve rehung and/or reground.

Handforged tomahawks are a small but significant subset of my herd.

Apparently Rinaldi are out of stock everywhere. They look pretty cool, the small Calabria has a 3/4 lb head and weighs 1 lb overall. Just what I am looking for. Good luck.

I know it's not what you are looking for, but my lightest, most packable and best performing ax is still the Fiskars hatchet I bought 11 years ago. It's not sexy in any way, but it just works.

The best splitting axe / maul I've ever used is that 3foot Fiskars splitter. Ugly, odd, rusty, but utterly functional.

While I have the Hunter's axe I've often thought about getting the Outdoor axe as well. Definitely have no need of it but I'm a sucker for nice things.
The Rinaldis look interesting too.

Which Fiskars have you been using?
I have all the "X" line, they are excellent.
My favorites are the X15 and the unbelievable X27 for splitting firewood.
Of course, they are not as beautiful as the traditional ones with wooden handles, but they are great for intense use.

Think I got something working. Got a WCF head on a short handle from a forum member; finally got around to putting it on a longer handle so it's nice and balanced. I like the look. I left a lot of meat under the poll because the eye was teeeeny, and I want to support the kerfed and wedged wood as much as I can. Time will tell if it'll hold.
