I want a knife to carry.

ESEE gets the vote for me, great products. My rc6 has been kicking around for a while now, fantastic knife.

I edited my post because I forgot that you didn't want stainless. I previously said the classic Buck 119 family of knives, but it's stainless 420hc. I think you'll have to look at traditional knives to get a carbon fixed blade with a leather sheath that comes with it. Otherwise, you can get a Becker Kabar fixed blade and have a leather sheath made for it, or make your own crude one to your own specifications!

Hmm, a classy gentleman's outdoor companion...

Well I'll start by directing you to the Kabar Mk. 1.

Then, I'd consider a Case Finn on ebay.

For 20 dollars, you can pick up an R Murphy Canadian Belt Knife, made in the USA from 1095 High Carbon, and it comes with a natural color veg tanned leather sheath. Fit and finish aren't superb but they clean up easily with a sharpening stone, some sandpaper and some tung oil.

I'd recommend RosArms, even though they are in stainless, they are in very practical stainless and are known for their blade strength. ''

If none of those do it for you, I can rattle off 10 custom makers that can build you a beautiful companion knife in the low 100's price range and pair it with a quality leather sheath.

Becker Knife and Tool....BK2. it will do anything you could ask a camp knife to do...and then some

I'd go for a custom from one of our fine makers here. You'll get exactly what you want and their pricing is very reasonable. Check out Laconico, JK, Breeden etc. You cannot go wrong.

Not sure I can meet all your criteria, but here are a few realistic suggestions:

Benchmade Rant Bowie Pardue ($69)
This knife has everything you asked for, except it is 440C steel (which is stainless). Given what you want to use the knife for, stainless would probably make more sense anyway. However, the knife meets all your other criteria. I have this knife.... good knife. Also, this knife is out of stock / discountinued and hard to find still. If you are interested, but it sooner rather than later. Great deal for the price.

I have decided I will probably go with a Queen Aged Honey Amber Stag Bone Skinner from Queen Cutlery.

That's a beautiful knife. I just ordered the Canoe Fixed Blade last night with the same handle material. Couldn't resist...

What else?

At least briefly glance over some of the traditional Scandinavian knife brands and see if that's a style that might interest you. Karesuando, Helle, Ahti, Brusletto...

I ordered just such a knife last night from R Murphy at rmurphyknives.com in Pennsylvania. On sale and with free shipping it was a bit over $20. I have two of their knives that were both under $30. They are made in the USA of 1095 carbon steel with full tangs and leather sheaths. Sharpest knives I ever got out of the box. Be sure to pay an extra two bucks, more or less, for the sheath upgrade. The standard sheaths are not that good, but the upgrade is more of a deep Scandi style sheath. There is a story behind the models I got too. They were brand-new but over thirty years old. Rather than spoil the story I'll let you check out their website and read it for yourself. 8)

Forgot to mention that the R. Murphy knives have hardwood handles. Nothing fancy, although they have a few models with more exotic woods for several more bucks.

Mora carbon companion has served me well for the past year
for 11.99

the sheath is plastic but functional but a leather one can be obtained at Bens backwoods
for about 24 bucks,.,.

so overall invetment of 36 beans for a great sharp knife..
it;ll carve cut, and skin.. I baton mine but if splitting sensibly with out issue, and its wicked easy to sharpen.
However if you are looking for a sharpened prybar style a knife than it is not that kind of tool. Good luck in your search

Correct, the Buck 102 would be a breeze to carry. One that I always like is the Peacemaker by Fehrman. This blade is small but fits liked molded to the hand, very nice ergos and some great quality heat treatment.

You've defined the environments your in but not exactly what you want the knife to do for you, what your price range (low to top dollar), what your preferences are for blade shape and grind. Also you need to let us know about how big you want in overall length, blade length, and maximum weight.

Without any of this info you'll most likely get a variety of suggestions of versatile knifes that might not fit your exact needs very well. Three that I'd suggest without knowing more info would be a short USMC (low price), a Fallkniven F1 (mid price), or a Koster BushMaster (higher price).

Forgot to mention Condor. Their Bushlore has an uncoated carbon steel blade, 1075. Their leather sheath are very nice too. Just $25.
