looking for a knife with a D2 blade, i have never used the steel and want to try it out

Preferences include:
-around 3" blade length
-Under $150
- preferred to have some sort or coating on the blade

Looking for any recommendations as well as why you recommend them, i have some in mind but im sure there are more than i can think of

Benchmade Bone Collector. No coating but it's not that big a deal. It's easy enough to keep clean.

I just got an H&K 14715 with a plain edge. It has BM's BK1 coating. D2 blade, G-10, skeletonized steel liners, Axis lock.
Look around the member retail websites and yo can find a good price and free shipping if you search a bit.

There's the D2 mini grip, lionsteel also uses D2 in their knives. I have the g10 mini opera in D2, great little knife, very classy.

There's many more, but these two come to mind first being under 3".

If you're worried about rust, D2 technically isn't a carbon steel, nor is it stainless, you'd be fine without a coating. I've been using D2 for food prep for a while, and I've never seen the least bit of patina.

I'll second this recommendation - the HK 14715 (made by Benchmade) is an incredible value at $120. The shape of the knife is amazing, the tip is right in the middle of the handle, and the slight curve cuts very well.

I wouldn't worry about not having a coating on D2. The most I've ever seen it do is turn grey. I think it looks good like that.

i found some on amazon, definitely a cool looking knife and in the top spot for now

Only problem with it is the blade length, i dont want a knife that big

You cannot go wrong with Duck Childress on the fixed blades sections on the exchange. Uses D2 on small neckers with kydex sheaths, or leather. Get a tapered tang, very light and fits the hand well.

I won't speak for the Op.. But how do you its not a it deal to him.? Coating isn't just about ease of cleaning, and I think it is kind of offensive to blow off his request... It's rather akin to recommend brand A when the guy wanted advice on brand B.

A couple exceptional knives I have owned in D2 are the Enzo Birk and the Lionsteel SR2a. The Enzo is a classy little knife with great fit and finish. Their CF has a wonderful texture to it. The Lionsteel is a wonderful little knife as well. Fit and finish is top notch and it is certainly a great looking knife. Technically it's Sleipner steel but from what I understand that's basically just a German variant of D2. They're both right in the size and price range you're looking and both are a little less mainstream.

Enzo:

Lionsteel is the bottom knife:

Second this idea....great knives with exception ergo's and the blade is awesome. Great knives. In either the large or the small.

They've been discontinued but still can be found.

There are some Ontario Rat 3's in D2 that surface from time to time. Queen makes their Mountain Man locking folder in D2 as well.

A HEST is not the most popular suggestion but it fits everything you require.
I recommend it because you can pick one up on the for sale section under your price. It is 3" with a black coated D2 blade and is made by Lionsteel. It has a functional wave feature that doubles as a bottle opener.
It's a hard use Ti frame lock at a reasonable price.

I should've worded it differently. I meant it wasn't a big deal to me.

I have and have had several knives in D2. Currently I have a Benchmade 585 mini barrage (orange handles), LionSteel Opera, and a Brous Bionic. I've also owned a LionSteel SR-1A and a D2 Mini-Grip. I personally find the coating not necessary. I think D2 is a fantastic steel. Can't go wrong with it. At around 3", the mini barrage and bionic are perfect. I didn't care for the minigrip so I sold it. There is also the LionSteel SR2, which uses sleipner which is like an enhanced D2.

how about a benchmade 710 that's a great knife. I am waiting for it in M390 but the D2 version would fit your price range, but no blade coating.

The powerful and deadly Leek can be had with a composite blade, the cutting edge is D2. Can even get it in a blackwash, if you like a coating.

Not coated, but the Becker BK24 is D2 and fairly reasonably priced. I have one and like it well enough.
