Lower gear ratio = slower retrieves; retrieve too fast and no fish can catch up to it, I prefer a slow steady retrieve with a little jerk here and there. and Bi-Mart replaces any rod they sell if one gets broken no charge, so you may want to see what warranty the retailer of the poles has. I have seen Bi-Mart take back a Lamiglass ($100.00 rod) and give the guy a new one no questions asked. I realize that Bi-Mart is only in OR, WA, and ID but you need to find a retailer that has a really good warranty to save you the hassle of trying to replace broken gear (as long as it isn't broken due to having a tailgate slammed on it or other non-normal usage). I can't see spending over $100.00 for a rod, especially since my wife would kill me if I did; now a bit over $100.00 for a rod/reel she can live with.
