Hi all,

I've been saving my pennies for a good quality EDC folder for quite some time. Will be doing mostly office type work with this, and once in a blue moonI will carve wood with it. I've decided that the most I will spend is $450. Looking for a 3 - 3.5 inch blade with some good weight to it. I have some knives in mine but I'm not gonna mention them and turn it into a this vs that vs this thread.

What are you thinkin?

I would take a gander at the Fallkniven PXL, it is a beautiful knife. Granted I may be biased as I just bought one..

You might as well get a small or large Sebenza, for $450 you can get one with inlays, I prefer the Plain 21, the best quality folder I personally have ever held, custom or production.

If you want to go the custom route, Darrel Ralph DDR Trigger Maze is a great option, you can order them for about that price, and he will customize it to your desires, with or without assisted opening, and collie blade and handle finish. I really like my Trigger and would recommend the maker.

You want a slipjoint or something locking?

And what kind of "office" work? Cutting cardboard kinda stuff or just light "around the office" sorta stuff?

Lots of options with $450. Personally, I would drop $250 on a a locking edc and the other $200 on a nice slipjoint or gentleman's folder.

You can always look at some of the wonderful custom knife makers here on BF and see if you can work with one to make THE knife you want within your price range?

Maybe a custom slippy from one of the makers. If I had the money to spend I'd get one.

That was what I was thinking...if there is even a possibilty of wood carving happening...I think you gotta go slipjoint. Maybe something nice in D2 from Queen if one doesn't want to get too "spendy."

If you don't already have good-quality EDC knives, I'd personally spend that $450 on a few production blades rather than putting it all into one knife. For me, the Spyderco Caly 3 CF, S90V/CF Para or Titanium Military are as high quality as I need, and for much less than a semi-custom or custom.

However, that's not to say I don't covet those with Sebenza's, XM18's, etc. I will probably shell out the cash for a large Sebenza 21 and 3.5" XM18 eventually, but I am very happy with my +/- $150 production pieces (mostly Spyderco's) ATM. I think it's awesome I can get such high-end materials without having to spend $300+

Go for a Spyderco Tenacious. Can get one for around 30 bucks USD.

Why? I'd rather have one quality knife that I use everyday then several of lesser quality. I personally agree that a Spyderco is of sufficient quality but if he has the budget to spend $450 on a knife, I say go for something special.

with 450 bucks you can basically go to a maker and get exactly what you want. it is a way better option than trying to find a knife that fits exactly what you want and lets you pick materials based on you specific use case. for example, you could go for S90V, which has excellent edge retention and would basically never have to be resharpened with just office work. just a suggestion.

I'm confused on how to do this "custom knife" business. Do I just call up a maker and tell him what I want? And yes, this will be a office type of knife. Any suggestions for customs or productions?

I'd say you ought to have a look at the custom sales thread section. If you see something you like, send the maker a message asking if they're taking new orders, or even offer to buy the one they have listed if it meets all of your criteria. They'll be in touch if they are open for business and will explain their preferred method of contact...

^ +1, if you want to go the custom route, $450 should be able to get you a great knife.

i would also suggest spending some of that money on a good sharpening system, a dull $400 knife makes an expensive cream cheese spreader.

Right now its between a large Micarta 21 with S30V or a small 21 Wilson combat Starbenza with S35VN. There is a 50 dollar price difference between them.
