I know there's about a hundread threads on the subject, I've searched it, but I keep reading the same thing over again...get a guyot bottle. I don't care about the quality they are, they are made in China, which I try to avoid unless it's get to be to expensive. Can any of you recommend an at least 30once bottle made in America or Canada that can be used to boild water?

I want a stailess because I've had a plastic nalgene crack on me so I had to share a canteen with my brother in law, even on a rainy muddy 50 degree day...we were both sick the following weekend...I can olny spend about $40 so nothing too pricey.

I rather a different canteen made in America or Canada, it's not that I'm racist to the Chinese, it's that I want to support American businesses, and I think Canadians know the outdoors, not to be casting a stereo-type on anybody of course.

I have a Guyot and a KK and I'm torn. The Guyot is definitely sturdier, but the KK is much easier to drink from. Both are unlined and food grade SS I think, so you can boil in both. More times than not, I'm carrying the KK.

Another plus for Kleen Kanteens. After the Bisphenol-A thing , I replaced all my old Nalgene bottles with KK's and newer plastic bottles. Be advised , they can dent on a rock if dropped , whereas a Nalgene or such just bounces off. Something to consider. I do like the get-cold-faster ability of the KK's. though.

I have both a Guyot and a New Kleen Kanteen WideMouth I thin I like the Kleen Better. Both are quality gear though.

the guyout is really heavy... i used to use the guyout for camping and the kk for city life, but then i realized the reason i was using the kk was that it was light and way more convenient to drink out of.... things that would also benefit me in the woods. I now own a 40 oz kk and a 27 oz with sport and normal tops for both.

I'm another one here with both the Kleen Kanteen and the Guyot. My KK is the narrow mouth so it is easier to drink from on the move, aside from that, I don't think there is much difference.

I went to Walmart and bought a SS Thermos, not the Alladin but another cheap brand. I think Ozark mountain or something. It has plastic rings on it to hold the handle but I busted them off and it works pretty good. 12 or 14 bucks.

Here. Jerry has them. Made in India. That's unusual for Jerry but he probably couldn't find any made here or the quality was crap or price insane.

Oh well. I like buying American too but when companies get big enough they no longer give a damn about Americans so why give a damn about them ?

These daze it seems that Honda and Toyota care more about America than GM or Chrysler.

Here's the bottles

Indian made on the Wiggy's stainless bottles is different. I might try one of those someday, just because. It looks like the cap has a chain leash on it, which is nice. Should do better around the fire than the cordage leashes I have.

Heres how to fix that on a Guyot!

Here's a tutorial "Thatmguy" here on the forums sent me a while back:
You will be able to see and get a good idea of the hole placement and ring/leader set up, esp the wrapping around the spout for carry with the lid on.

You'll need two #5 split rings and one 18" or 24" stainless swiveled leader per bottle, and a 1/16" and 1/8" metal drill bit.

If you have access to a drill press this is about 10 minutes total for both bottles. If not, a vice minimum to hold the bottle.

BE CAREFUL AND GO SLOW. A WALKING DRILL BIT AND FLESH DO NOT WORK WELL TOGETHER IF THERE IS A SLIP UP!! (esp if no vice avail either). I'd ask around and see if a friend has either avail before doing this, just to prevent ER visit...

Remove the lid and retention cord stuff.

Eyeball and mark (or measure, but it's not brain surgery) a spot on opposite sides of the flat rim below the threads.

Secure the bottle in a vertical position.

Using the 1/16" bit, drill a pilot hole at each of the markings on the rim. I found that if I let the bit just barely skim/touch the threads, it positions the hole about half-way on the flat rim.

Be careful when drilling this so as to not hit the bottle body when you break thru the rim with the bit.

Repeat for other holes and bottle.

Now, this is where it gets a little tricky. The 1/8 bit will not allow you to drill in a vertical (perpendicular to the rim) manner and still keep the hole “centered” on the rim.

You have to cant/lean the bottle a little bit (this is where the drill press and/or vise are critical for safety), less than 30-degrees for sure. All you need to do is make sure the bit misses the threads, yet is somewhat close to vertical so as to keep the resulting hole close to round and not elongated. Hope that makes sense.

Using the 1/8 bit and drill thru the pilot holes and where you just break thru the rim (but don’t hit the bottle) for all holes/bottles.
You’ll now have some metal/roughness around the holes. A small flat file will take care of this.

Install the split rings into the holes. I found the easiest way was to open with my thumbnail, and insert one of the ends of needle nosed pliers in between to hold open.

Slide the ring (kinda on its side so the rim slips in between the ring end and the rest of the ring) onto the rim so the end of the ring is at the hole you drilled. Using the needle nosed pliers, grab the ring and kinda twist it so it is started into the hole, then work it around with the pliers until it is completely through.

Then all you need to do is install the leader, and you’re in business.

The pics will show you how the leader can be wrapped around the neck so the cap can be re-installed.

I found that wrapping it first, then re-installing the cap/cord works best.

Hope this all makes sense.

I believe that a company called US Canteen makes a SS bottle that is made here is the states. Check them out.

God Bless

Their website (uscanteendotcom) does not say where they are made, unless my eagle eyes missed it. How can one be sure that it is made in the USA?

Those are great, you can boil water in them while still being able to carry it on an alice pouch on the belt, which I perfer. Thanks for the help.
