I am an avid Spyderco collector. But the new line-up seems to be geared toward smaller knives. I prefer knives with a minimum bladelenght of 3.5 inch, preferably larger 4 inch.
Now i am looking into a ZT 200. Any reason why i should/ should not buy this knife? Some say it's too big, and heavy. BTW i have no problem carrying the Spyderco Szabo. I don't have the budget to buy a RIL version as a first ZT knife, i am just looking for a sturdy, big folding knife.

Thanks

Too large and heavy? I will be the first to call BS, I love spyderco and ZT and in my experience ken onions ergonomics are up there with spydercos. for the size I love it and it actually carries quite well. I say buy without hesitation, the 0200 is by far one of my favorite knives and will remain to be a favorite for quite some time.

I'm with 9blades on this one. Based on your preferences, Jim, I can't think of a single reason you should not buy an 0200. For what it's worth, I used to own one but I sold it . . . not because there was anything wrong with it but because it was just too darn big for me to EDC. If you can handle the size and the weight, you'd be hard-pressed to purchase more knife for your money.

I agree 100% with 9blades, my ZT 200 is one of my favorite EDCs. The edge is a little thick, but it is one heck of a folder. :)

It sounds like the 0200 is just what you are looking for. I love mine. I can't understand Spyderco's fixation on "lightweight" knives. Why do they think a grown man is not capable of carrying a knife that weighs more than two ounces?

"sturdy, big folding knife"? You just described the ZT 0200 to a tee. It's one of my most comfortable knives in the hand and I love it. Other knives have come and gone from my collection but the 0200 is a constant. I'm a huge Spyderco fan as well, and while some of their 'big' knives like the Endura really don't do it for me, the ZT 0200 just fits perfectly. I'd say it's one of the best designed folder handles going round.

My one friend thinks my 0350 is too big and heavy just loves the 0200. Granted, he would not buy something this big but he is impressed with it. He really likes the egronomics. Its big, its sturdy, its everything I want in a knife. Pick one up on the exchange if you can, you wont be sorry

I love Spyderco to death, but this is my biggest issue with them. I don't understand their facination with thin, narrow and pointy blades.

They cut well. Not to say the 0200 doesn't, but spyderco grinds their knives thiner, and they cut better because of it.

I don't think that's the point. It's more a matter of matching the tool to the task. Obviously, you don't need a knife the size of an 0200 to perform office duties, for example, nor do you need to scare the sheeple unnecessarily. And clearly there's a market for lightweight folders. If you don't believe me, ask Matt Conable.

And conversely, you don't want a thin, under 4 oz knife for doing heavier stuff, like farm work or construction. I've never seen anyone scared when a big, beefy knife is pulled out on the job site. And clearly there is a market for tough, heavy, over-built folders. If you don't believe me, ask ZT.

I'd agree with that. I'm just not sure I'd select a folder to do the heavier stuff like farm work or construction when a fixed-blade might be better suited to the job. And clearly there's a market for fixed-blade knives. If you don't believe me, ask Jerry Busse. ;) :D

You two are like an old married couple:rolleyes:

Spyderco does make larger heavier knives, they just don't get into the crazy overbuilt area that the 0200 holds. The Starmate, Gayle Bradley etc are both pretty heavy duty.

Not many production knives get in the area of the 0200 as far a build though. Solid pivot and stop pin is not something you see every day.
