You could buy the SOG Fast Hawk and see if the concept meets your expectations.
I tend to over spend on the Beta and then sell at a loss.

Just don't pay too much for the SOG. I've seen it selling for about $45, yet got mine last year around Christmas for $20. It's worth $20, not $45. If you're going to spend $45 just go ahead and get the Estwing.

Wal Mart blew the Fast Hawk out as a lost leader last Christmas. There's 1 of those bargains sitting next to my truck seat.

Those knives with the window breaker are nice but...

I found out that the sog tac hawk is not a good woods hawk, it's really a fighting hawk.. It's very hard to keep an edge on it. It's very head heavy, and slippery when handle is wet. I tried para cord on it and that made it worse. Slipped right out of my hand and hit me in the shin, I wear a hard cast ankle brace so it stopped from goin into my leg. The tip on the top of the bit did penetrate all thew. It hurt and is not worth it's weight in the woods. It is decent for training because of the weight. My fav. Hawk is the trail hawk. That holds an edge and its razor sharp. Keeps its edge...cold steel has great hawks. I was lookin at the trench hawk but it's to thin for my liking so I will be getting the spike hawk next.... The fast hawk is actually decent. Got it last year at WM fee $20 and some change. I also bought the sog tad hawk for $27.98 with free shipping from amazon.com

If I wanted an inexpensive hawk, I'd probably go for the full tang Estwings. Browning's advertising will cause hawks to become illegal in every state, so I wouldn't buy from them. Cold Steel+M48+SOG aren't full tang. S&W looks interesting...

I have a SOG tac and a fast and both hold an edge well and both have seen their share of wood, from pine to oak. I can't say for their throwability because.......well I can't throw one for $#it. But they are decent choppers.

Just my ¢2.
