There's just something about a longtime companion. I enjoy knives too much to ever stop accumulating them, but a knife that has been carried for years and proven its worth is special.

This one has a good start, but I figure it'll take at least a couple more decades of consistent carry to truly become pocketworn.

I saw a well-worn folding knife from around the Civil War in a museum - I think in Gettysburg PA - and thought to myself, THAT'S what I want. The stories it could have told. Great patina. Sadly, no pictures.

The wife's grandfather carried this one shipboard throughout WW2 (USN).

The stitching on the sheath let go so he re strung it with aluminum wire.

I think it had stories to tell before then.

Give me an hour and I could rehandle it, two hours and a new sheath too and it would be ready to go again. But why? Leave the old warrior be.

Putting the time in can be so hard when you have a stable of knives and a flavor of the month mentality. I’m tricking myself into thinking I’ve settled on a single knife, pattern, make.... ect. And the next thing I know another one is on its way to dethrone my “one”.

Christian, your #73 is aging gracefully and showing it’s wear with pride. I’m a huge fan of that pattern and the stag is amazing. It won’t be long before it’s formed into that special combination of used, trusted, cherished and tried. One day someone will tell you that knife is beat and it’s time for a new one, but you’ll know better.

I look at my grandfather’s knife with the blade eaten away and it makes me smile.

Dont we all !
Minus the sharpening scratches I'd sure love my knives to look like that someday, I've got a few that do but sadly someone else a long time ago had the pleasure of getting them like this.

Here's a couple of standouts of mine.

I'm sure this knife has a story to tell.
it's at least 100 years old and had a sheath made for it more recently, so this was probably someone's outdoors / hunting companion for a long time.
Its seen some use for sure but was obviously well taken care of.

I'm sure this one has some stories to tell as well.
It's estimate at 40's-60's and was probably in someone's pocket everyday for a long time.
It's well used but not abused and has a great patina.

This last one is a bit of a different story as it has seen some kind of abuse, but it sure has me wondering more than any other.
It's got a layer of steel missing in spots and you can feel the crisp transition, I'm thinking it got left with some kind of corrosive chemical on it but I'll never know.

How did you get the dark spots of the stag to lighten up? I assume the dark is mostly dirt that has worn off. I carry my knife almost every day, straight into my pocket with keys and such. I use it often for a worry stone. It doesn't look nearly as aged as your stepdad's knife though, and I've been carrying it for nearly five years.

Already there. I have a few knives, and pick up new ones here and there, but no matter how good the others are I can't stay away from this one. I'll carry different knives for variety, but I quickly get twitchy and end up missing the #73. At the end of the day it's back in my pocket.

Old Boiley (OB) is back in my pocket again, after several months. I was carrying a New Ancient, but came across OB who had gone walkabout (as is his wont ), turned up and hopped
in!!:)
It has been my main carry since December 2012, and will monopolize my pocket for the foreseeable future, or until wanderlust strikes again!!
:D
Old Boiley Aug 2015 A.jpg Old Boiley n Co 1.jpg August 2015 at top, and today (7/27/2018) at bottom with friend!!

I used to carry the same knife everyday for years, now I seldom carry the same one two days in a row and I miss the familiarity of a knife as an old friend. I just bought a duplicate of a knife that I had as a kid. I left the patina of age on it, but it feels dishonest since it only looks like it's been in my pocket for years.
