I want to add another knife, but I'm running out of reasons to buy one!

Hey all, I've got a three knife collection now that covers most of my needs. Spyderco Dragonfly salt for fishing, benchmade mini grip my father gave me, and a spyderco manix 2 LW as my larger edc. The two spydies are with me all the time, dfly on my neck and manix on my waist.

So here's the deal...truth is, I'd kind of like another knife, but I'm not really much of a "collector". I like whatever knives I'm using all the time. The more I use them, the more I like them. I hate the idea of spending money on something I don't need and having it sit around unused. So...here's the neurotic part...I'm trying to think up some new "needs". Hehehe. Right now I'm thinking a larger fishing knife like the pacific salt or the benchmade h2o, or a larger knife more suited to food prep.

So on the fishing knife, i have done a fair bit of research and narrowed it down to those two. I would have to just pick one of the two, but I'm not so sure about food prep. I know I don't want a fixed blade right now. I would want a ffg for food. Pretty long and thin blade. And ideally something that makes sense as a useful edc also. I'm thinking something like the spyderco police? I don't know.

I'm really not sure there are any holes in my lineup that need filling...but I WANT to believe! ::D

P.S. I wish spyderco would re-release the Catcherman in h1. I could really use that knife!

You're looking at it at all the wrong angle. You don't have to need a knife to buy it. If you want something and you can afford it, buy it.

People need reasons buy stuff they want? Since when.... If you want it, and can afford it, get it... if you cant afford it, finance it!

I have a few knives for all occasions right now. I have some that are either exactly at or under 3" to stay within company policy for work, I have some that are classy for fancy occasions (weddings and such), a few that are beefier for when I'm out and about and know i'll be outside and may need some further grunt to do some harder work.

Basically, I'm kind of on the same page as Mr. Barnard up there, in that if there is something you want and think you could use... go for it! You could certainly pick up another Spyderco in an H1 steel, like the Salt 1, to rotate out the Dragonfly every now and then. Another large EDC to give your Manix 2 a break couldn't hurt either. Options, my friend! You gotta get yourself to the point where picking your blade for the day is like dressing yourself ;)

If you want a really thin, long blade for a folder take a look at the benchmade onslaught. The blade is crazy thin and broad. I think it would work perfectly for some food prep.

Also, to the OP,

Are you a Surfin Gringo,

Or a Surfing Ringo?

The former ;-). Costa Rica.

I only see the first part of the title. I thought that was the reason to buy a new knife.

Reasons?

You need a gentleman's knife. Something classy.
You want to try slipjoints.
You want to try serrations.
You want to try slipjoints.
You want to try all different locking systems.
You want to try exotic materials.
You want to try slipjoints.
See where im going with this?
You should buy a Case knife

Weird...I feel the sudden desire to try a slipjoint!

Fixed blade to mount on my fishing kayak is actually a consideration. I think spyderco is doing at least one in h1 steel.

Bingo. You don't need a reason. You have to remember it's a hobby, none of us Need to buy a new knife, we just like to. It makes us happy, and in the big scheme of things, knives are pretty cheap. As long as you're not putting yourself into debt, buy what you like, it's no more ridiculous than people who like to collect coins or stamps, or guitars, and WAY better than for instance, the guy who blows all his cash on pull tabs at the bar...

Gosh, I cannot think of why I would actually need more than my Chris Reeve large Sebenza. But I've had at least fifteen or twenty over the past year. In addition to a bunch of others. I love folders. It's a hobby. I buy and I sell, and most of them are never carried by me. I generally sell one so that I can afford to buy another. It's my "recreation."

Yeah, for sure, I hear what y'all are saying. I just know that I end up enjoying the things in life that I use all the time! Not just knives, I'm kind of like that with everything. I tend to quickly jettison anything in my life that i dont use almost daily. I'll probably never have a huge collection for that reason. I know myself, and if i buy something on a whim that doesnt get used, i wont get any enjoyment out of it. That may sound dumb, but it's just the way I'm wired. But if I could think of something I know I would USE, I'd be happy to buy it! Money isn't the issue, I could go crazy if I wanted, I'm just kind of a minimalist by nature.

Thats why I was thinking of something that might see a lot of kitchen use. Everybody needs a good blade for food prep right?

And of course if I got something like the Police, I could fight off ninjas with it too!! See? It's all about being practical! ;-)

Okay... here's the deal buddy... You want a new knife.
So get one, get one you find attractive and like and think "Oh I can see myself carrying that".
You don't need a job for every knife.. but you need a knife for every job.
Do what I do and swap out the knives you carry.
Like say.. Manix 2 for one week and the new EDC the next.

Why not get a kitchen knife, then? Foreschner makes great stamped knives with fibrox handles. The chef's knife is pretty good, Ilike mine.

So cycle them out. Pick a group of knives you like, maybe 7, then carry a Manix 2 one day, a Griptilian the next, then a Blur, and so on, and repeat each week. Then you get 7 knives, all being used regularly(likewise you could change the number of knives in your rotation, maybe you pick 4 and carry one per week then repeat each month, whatever).

Because he'd look silly surfing with a kitchen knife in a kydex sheath ducttapped to the leg of his board shorts :P
